BREWS

Hiya from NZ...

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 04:30 PM PDT

Hi all.
Attended a brew festival recently and accidentally bought a Brewzilla 35 litre. I have no clues about brewing but am enjoying reading up on things. Picking the unit up today and will give it a run through with water next week.
Look forward to making a few brews. Any/all advice will be gratefully received... 🙂

Grainfather Micro Pipework

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 04:29 PM PDT

Did a Theakston's Best Bitter last weekend. Fitting the top plate on the Grainfather G30 I found that the long pipework wouldn't adjust far enough down. Should have used the small pipework instead. I had to proceed without the top plate and all went fine, but I was annoyed with myself.
4.3% on a 23L brew but I didn't stop to consider that it was only a 3.65kg grain bill supplemented with 400g of dextrose at the boil.

Anyone got some guidance on the size of grain bill for the large and...

Irish Moss - Have I Made a Mistake?!

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 04:22 PM PDT

Hi everyone. Had a bit of thick moment earlier - I brewed an Erdinger type clone this morning, but habit got the best of me and I added Irish Moss at 5mins (I usually brew stouts and IPA's) - no sooner had it hit the water, when I slapped my forehead in true Homer style, but said something worse than 'doh'. Am I likely to have a clear beer instead of the cloudy type that Weiss beers should have?

The grain bill, if it's of any use, was 1kg Pale Wheat, 900g Maris Otter and 65g of Munich. (10L...

Grainfather conical fermenter

Does anybody have, or know a bit about the fermenter.
I have a couple of questions before my next brew.

Making perry for the first time - any advice welcome!

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 03:45 PM PDT

I've been brewing beer for ten years, but haven't ventured into cider-making. Seeing as my parents have a pear tree in their garden, whose pears are hard and tart and which they do nothing with, I feel like I should have a go at making perry later this year.

As a complete novice when it comes to cider and perry, any advice is welcome on pressing, yeast, process, etc!

Mojito Kilju

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 03:13 PM PDT

I don't normally copy recipes, but this looked intriguing!

Mojito Kilju from CS Mead channel.

Mine is slightly different to theirs, as I don't agree with some of their methods. Here is what I put in mine:-

1.2kg granulated sugar
2 x packets fresh mint (leaves only)
Zest and juice of one lime.
Yeast Nutrient (plenty!)

This is what it looks like! Pond water at the moment, but apparently it turns out fantastic so we'll see!

Hydrometer Reading!!!

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:51 PM PDT

I broke my trusted hydrometer a few weeks ago and purchased a new one.
I used it tonight for the first time and and confused with what I seen .
I am no home brew expert and keep it simple brewing extract kits and dry hopping.
This evening I made a mangrove jack 1.7kg real ale kit and added 1kg brown sugar.
I have made these kits many times and the OG is normally 1042.
I first of all put my hydrometer in the test jar with water and it read 1002.
I then brewed this kit and got an OG of...

Pulled the pin

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:48 PM PDT

Finally pulled the pin on a corny keg order with BKT. I've been 'umming and 'arring for a couple of weeks and finally took the plunge. I Ordered BKT's 2 keg starter kit including SS taps, 1 off additional refurbed keg, 4 way manifold (just in case), and a sodastream adapter.

I have a stout and a Saison I could put straight into these when they arrive, however I may put the stout in a PB and brew a Kolsch and AIPA to make best use of the kegs. clapa

Anyone tried both the MJ wheat kit and the Festival German Weiss?

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:45 PM PDT

Just had both delivered and will be starting one on Friday when my Cooper's wheat kit is ready for kegging.

Thoughts on them? Does either stick out?

The Quest for the Perfect Bitter

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:33 PM PDT

Before America was discovered, about 20 years ago, we had bitter, stout, mild, brown ale, lager and foreign beer. You either drunk bitter or lager- I don't recall any of my age group drinking mild, and brown was Newkie, never Forest. I was and always have been a bitter man and yet this is now a minority style and, as far as I'm concerned, one of the hardest styles to get right. I also have this (probably false) memory of the perfect pint of bitter with a decent, tight head, light in colour...

How long will beer keep in a keg?

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:30 PM PDT

Just started kegging.

How long will my beer keep in kegs?

Bottle swap.

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:30 PM PDT

I didn't get any takers when I posted this in the- What are you drinking thread, so will try here.

I recently kegged a riwaka pale ale.

Recipe is in my brewday thread. Think heavy hopped hazy pale.

I am happy to bottle a few this week to send for a swap. Particularly looking for a Belgian pale, dunkelweizen or Baltic porter in return. Why those, well they are planned brews and I would like to try some before building a recipe. I am happy to send the beer first so the box can be returned...

Pseudo lager recipe/method help

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:26 PM PDT

Hi all

I've just started all grain/BIAB (after a number of extract and mini mashes etc) and all seems to be going to plan. Thus far my repertoire has been mainly hoppy pale ales. I'm going to order more ingredients for a hefeweizen, saison and gose. And with spring/summer on the horizon I fancied knocking out an easy drinking lager style beer for the hoi polloi. Problem is with a number of brews lined up (as above) I didn't want my fermentation chamber/fridge to be tied up for a vast number...

American IPA

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 01:33 PM PDT

Hi all
I'm gonna have a go at making as many American ipa style brews as possible and I'm looking for some suggestions.
So far I've made the youngs IPA and the festival ipa. What others american IPAs can you guys recommend.
Thanks in advance
Dicko.
