Mangrove Jacks Grapefruit IPA

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 06:27 PM PDT

Hi All,

New member looking for some guidance.

Looking to to start this kit over the weekend. Kit says to ferment for 7 days before adding the hops and bottling after a further 2-3 days.

One thing I have gleaned from this site is that longer is better so my previous kit I bottled after 3 weeks rather than the 1 week suggested by the kit.

If I do similarly with this kit, at what stage do I add the hops - after 7 days or 2-3 days before bottling?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Dec 2020. Made as per recipe from the 'pouch' using 1.2kg of light malt extract. Starting SG was 1.047 with 23 litres. Fermentation stopped at 1.010; used the 120g of priming sugar and got 43 bottles - very dark. It's drinkable, quite tangy, good head.
Personally it's not really to my taste - I think I expected more 'grapefruit'. However nothing wrong with the kit really. I would do other MJ kits based on this.

CO2 in Central Scotland

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 05:21 PM PDT

Is it cool to highlight good suppliers on here? I read someone posting about this company on here through a Google search and I think it could do with being highlighted.

Lothian Supply Company in Livingston. £50 to purchase a 6kg cylinder full of CO2. You own the cylinder. Refills are a fiver. Yep, £5.

I had an account set up with BOC and everything. £35 a refill. Thankfully I done a bit more research.

I mix bits from recipes to get where I want it and add as much heat as you like. Makes "British Indian restaurant" style curries. A bit of messing about to get set up but nothing you can't find at a decent supermarket or Asian store.

Hazelwood Brewday

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:51 PM PDT

I only joined the group a few days ago and today was my first brewday since joining so I thought I ought to give this a go - at least once.

Starting with the crime scene, I revamped our garden a couple of years ago. My wife wanted decking, a gazebo, and comfortable seating, I wanted a bar, win-win!

So this is where I also brew, at my bar, shown here in winter plumage (clear plastic PVC tarps fitted to two sides).

March 2021 Comp - Freestyle!!

Good Afternoon Homebrewers!!

Perhaps a little early but buoyed by the beautiful weather and having just brewed a hopefully cracking IPA I thought I'd start the March Freestyle Comp thread!

Judging will take place on either the first or second weekend of April. Covid dependant I may have a friend round to help drink them around a fire in the garden!

Freestyle of course speaks for itself, but i'm looking forward to judging a wide variety of beer, whatever you have, i'll drink and judge...

Music

In the name of getting to know the regulars a bit more, what music do you all like? I'm a bit of a rocker, (hard rock and metal) but was born in the late 70's so also love the 80s and 90s stuff.

Having grown up with musicals and done a few musical theatre shows I'm also a lover of this sort of stuff!

Would be great to know everyone else's preferences! 🤟

Keg Kingdom come up trumps

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:15 PM PDT

I posted in another thread that I had ordered from Keg Kingdom, not realising they had some poor reviews. Been panicking a bit since, but my order arrived this morning and I'm very impressed.

Ordered 2 kegs and a starter kit. Both kegs are Coca Cola-style but have had new ball-lock lid and posts fitted. The regulator and all fittings look to be very well made.

For £144, and considering how much it would cost from other suppliers, this has been an absolute bargain.

Bottle swap.

I didn't get any takers when I posted this in the- What are you drinking thread, so will try here.

I recently kegged a riwaka pale ale.

Recipe is in my brewday thread. Think heavy hopped hazy pale.

I am happy to bottle a few this week to send for a swap. Particularly looking for a Belgian pale, dunkelweizen or Baltic porter in return. Why those, well they are planned brews and I would like to try some before building a recipe. I am happy to send the beer first so the box can be returned...

St Peter's Golden Ale

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:24 PM PDT

June 2020 - please move if there is a better place mods.

Exactly as per instructions. SG at start 1.042. Boosted with dry hops - 20g Mandarina, 10 g Cascade, 10g Simcoe at SG of 1.006 - 20 litres.
120g of priming sugar, 40 bottles, very golden colour, quite tasty. However, I think when I did it without the extra hops in 2019 I think it was just great too.
Took a long time to clear.

Coopers European Lager Review

July 2020 - Standard kit using 500g of LDM; 300g of Dextrose and 200g Maltodextrin. Starting SG = 1.040.
Made about 42 bottles (22 litres) at SG of 1.009; using 160g of sugar priming; was quite cloudy.
It looks nothing like the B*cks bottle.
It took a good few weeks to settle; I like it and drank it quite fast. Though I am not that fussy. Would do again I think.

Pulled the pin

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:15 PM PDT

Finally pulled the pin on a corny keg order with BKT. I've been 'umming and 'arring for a couple of weeks and finally took the plunge. I Ordered BKT's 2 keg starter kit including SS taps, 1 off additional refurbed keg, 4 way manifold (just in case), and a sodastream adapter.

I have a stout and a Saison I could put straight into these when they arrive, however I may put the stout in a PB and brew a Kolsch and AIPA to make best use of the kegs. clapa

Coopers Hefe Lager review

Nov 2020. Standard kit using 1.2l of Mangrove Jack malt. Starting SG 1.041 which seemed a bit low. I boosted this with some honey solution to to 1.045 making 21 litres.
It pretty much stopped at 1.012 so I added 250g of brewing sugar and a few days later 20g of Mandarina hops.
Bottled 40 using 130g of priming sugar at SG of 1.009.
Notes suggest I did not use the kit yeast.
Enjoyable, drinkable - but prob would not redo. Standard Coopers Lager felt better

John Bull IPA review

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 01:58 PM PDT

Made this Jan 2021.
Standard kit with 250g of molasses sugar, 750g brewing sugar and 250g of maltodextrin. Starting SG was 1.044 at 22 volume. Final SG was 1.008 and I used 25g of Cascade dry hopped.
I ended up with 40 bottles using 120g of priming sugar at SG of 1.007. Very dark beer, poured well, perfectly drinkable, nothing special. But still drinking it happily.

Tom Caxton Lager kit Review

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 01:51 PM PDT

Feb 2021. Made as standard kit with 500g of spraymalt and 500g brewing sugar. Starting SG was measured at 1.042 at 20 litres volume. I added 25g of Saaz hops after 11 days at SG of 1.009 and got 39 bottles a few days later - same SG using 140g of priming sugar. It looked quite dark initially - but after a few weeks - it cleared to a 'lager' colour.
Poured with a nice head and it tastes fine (I drink most things though). I would do this again and it was good value. It seems stronger than...

Juicy Session IPA - Mangrove Jack's review

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 12:42 PM PDT

Thanks to Give away from Brew 2 Bottle I have this kit - thank you again guys. As promised bellow is a review from brewing day. Tasting in six weeks.

This is a pilot kit according to writing on the package, comes with additional hops for dry hopping and M44 US west coast yeast. Bew2Bottle threw in Malt Extract 1.2kg, sanitiser and carbonating drops.

First started with heating the kit pouch (after removing hops and yeast) and malt extract in warm water to make it easier to remove it from...

Other uses for WY3944 Belgian Witbier?

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 12:36 PM PDT

I've got a Witbier in the FV, fermented with WYeast 3944 Belgian Witbier, which I am going to transfer at the end of this week. I'm going to save some of the slurry, and am wondering if anyone has had any experience/success in using this yeast in other styles (Belgian or otherwise)? I'm thinking about giving it a go in either a Belgian pale, golden strong, or Tripel at the end of the year to see how it pans out...
