Oxidised commercial beer?

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 07:41 PM PDT

I got a flavourly box this week and tonight I'm having the Kviek pale from Hilden brewery.

I don't know if I'm going mad or not, but I think it's oxidised. It has an odd Sherry flavour going on and the "healthy dry hop" of Vic secret is almost undetectable. I'm pretty sure it has discolouration although it doesn't look that much darker than some of the pictures on Untappd.

Tastes like bad home brew.

Opinions. I have another can of it that I'll have when the kids are in bed and see if it's...

Irish Moss - Have I Made a Mistake?!

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 07:18 PM PDT

Hi everyone. Had a bit of thick moment earlier - I brewed an Erdinger type clone this morning, but habit got the best of me and I added Irish Moss at 5mins (I usually brew stouts and IPA's) - no sooner had it hit the water, when I slapped my forehead in true Homer style, but said something worse than 'doh'. Am I likely to have a clear beer instead of the cloudy type that Weiss beers should have?

The grain bill, if it's of any use, was 1kg Pale Wheat, 900g Maris Otter and 65g of Munich. (10L...

Best Pilsner in 6 weeks

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:23 PM PDT

It suddenly dawned on me today that in 6 weeks i will be 50 - hopefully lockdown will have eased and sun will be shining. Would like to make a good rounded Pilsner - can it be done in 6 weeks? If so, any recipes would be most gratefully received. (will need to be bottle conditionEd)

Grain mill motor

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 04:23 PM PDT

I have a bulldog roller mill that I have been using for a while with a 18V drill. Now that I am doing much bigger batches I am milling upto 20kg each batch and last batch burned out my drill, I guess its from prolonged use at very low speed (I use a tie wrap to hold the trigger slightly down so it is rotating as slow as possible). I bought another drill but this is something I use a lot and dont want to destroy my new one. Does anyone know of a good motor for a grain mill? It would need to...

Landline.

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 04:09 PM PDT

Today's discussion on 5 live is people ditching their landlines.
As far as I know my ISP doesn't offer this and I recently moved to fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) so it will be 18 months until I could change if they bring a package out.
I believe some ISP's are offering landline free packages which I assume are fibre to the property (FTTP) are there any members saving money by not having a landline and how have you achieved this.

How many litres of home brew have you made 2021.

Last years record has been smashed was Covid part of the reason, did you make more in 2020 than you would have had covid not happened?

Selling some iSpindel devices that I've built while trying to fend off the boredom of lockdown and home working!
These are on the Cherry Phillip 4.0 boards, and loaded with the latest firmware 6.3.1 (happy to say that I contributed a couple of small changes to the release despite not been a dev!).
I'm including a genuine samsung 25R battery, UK-sourced and not fake!
I've put a few on ebay, but have agreed with Admin that I can also offer a few here as several people have shown interest, and...

Lots of rhubarb!

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 03:13 PM PDT

So I've just bought 10kg of frozen rhubarb so I thought I'd go a bit mad (what's new?)

I've made a 5 gallon mead and a 5 gallon wine. 5kg of rhubarb in each one. Didn't want a strong flavour so we'll see if that's enough. 🙈😁

The mead is the first pic.

Degassing and plastic carboys.

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 03:02 PM PDT

Hello. I'm new to the whole wine making thing. Have my first batch on the go - a Wine Works Chardonnay. Just getting to thinking about degassing. I've read quite a bit on this forum and elsewhere, and am a little confused. I'll be using a paddle to degas, and was wondering if having spent a day doing that, it would be reasonable to then transfer it into the plastic carboy that came with the kit, and leave it in there for a week or so before bottling to allow some more time to degas...

What did you brew today?

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 02:24 PM PDT

Some people may not want to write out a full brewday report but just say what they brewed.

So what did you brew today?

Overrated beers

I just wonder what beer styles or individual beers you find overrated.
Mine would be NEIPA's which I find cloudy and flat.

What BBQ?

Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:33 PM PDT

I'm in the market.

The last couple of days sunshine has just made me realise my shonky 4 year old Aldi special rust bucket of a BBQ is not going to be with me much longer.

Pics and recommendations welcome
