T-58 Yeast

Posted: 22 May 2021 05:19 PM PDT

I'm brewing a Belgian Blonde soon, I'll be using T-58 yeast. Up until recently, I chilled the wort to around 20C, shoved in a shower cubicle with a fairly stable 20-22c temp fluctuation and left until done, then cold crashed. I've recently got me some better temperature control and am wondering what sort of fermentation schedule people might use for this yeast? Cheers!

How to degas wine with a home made degassing wand

Posted: 22 May 2021 05:02 PM PDT

Shaking a DJ to get rid of the CO2 takes time and is a bit of a PITA and using a big spoon to degas 23 litres of wine is not much better, a degassing wand makes degassing a minute job.

You can also use it to mix all your ingredients meaning you dont have to heat water to dissolve the sugar, this saves time and cleaning sticky pans etc.

Watch click tricks video on how to make a degassing wand from an old coat hanger below.

When using the wand start in forwards for 5...

Lots of rhubarb!

Posted: 22 May 2021 04:55 PM PDT

So I've just bought 10kg of frozen rhubarb so I thought I'd go a bit mad (what's new?)

I've made a 5 gallon mead and a 5 gallon wine. 5kg of rhubarb in each one. Didn't want a strong flavour so we'll see if that's enough. πŸ™ˆπŸ˜

The mead is the first pic.

Covid the jab and the final stage.

Posted: 22 May 2021 03:29 PM PDT

SWMBO is a front line worker (carer) she has had the first jab and is now tested twice a week she also has the lateral flow test with the results showing 30 minutes after the test whenever she goes to work on the other days, there are no cases of Covid where she works and there hasn't been for quite a while.

I am hoping as a front line worker my turn will come soon my age will also help, its not often i am glad i am an old fart. :laugh8:

Ive made a Beaverdale Merlot which was nice but a little on the thin side. Im hoping this will be as good as their white.

I decided to give this one a go in my fermzilla. Im hoping this isnt going to be a stupid idea and will allow the gunk to collect more efficiently and make racking off better.

N00b in need of help

Posted: 22 May 2021 03:14 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm totally new to homebrew. I have all the gear but not really any idea. All I'm wanting to know is how much of everything I have to put in my brew. I've looked all over and one says one thing another says something else. I'll show you exactly what I have in pics and a list. If somebody could please look at what I have and make it really simple for me because I'm totally lost!

Oops - added priming sugar to bottling bucket then decided to cold crash

Posted: 22 May 2021 03:05 PM PDT

Hello, I am wondering if I have made a horlicks of my Youngs New World Saison.

I added the dry hops several days ago when the SG was 1.006 after 10 days

Today the SG was still 1.006 (which is the bottle-me FG according to the instructions) so I :

- dissolved the suplied 135g priming sugar in my 110ml hydrometer sample in a sterile cup.
- racked from FV into bottling bucket via autosyphon, sticking tube into the cup in the bottling bucket.
- noticed that the brew in the bottling bucket was...

What happens if I don’t cold crash?

So that's the question. Is is necessary, because if it is, I'm not ready to do my first brew!

My Australian Monster

Like Doctor Frankenstein I am seeking to combine and reanimate the dead!

I've posted previously that I came into possession of an out of date Coopers Australian Lager kit and was pondering what to do with it. I found some information from someone who has tried brewing old kits and reported that they are still OK to use (in my case the can itself looked in good condition) but fermentation may take longer and have a higher finishing gravity. Using it to bulk up another...

Another dreaded "has my fermentation finished?" thread.

Stout started out with OG reading of 1042, a vigorous first few days fermentation followed by steady bubbling slowing right down in the last few days. It's now had two full weeks in the fermenter and today airlock activity seems to have ceased so I took a reading which came out at 1020, which is only about 3% alcohol. I believe 1020 is within the realms of credibility for a final gravity, but I am a bit surprised as 1042 was lower than I was expecting to start with and 1020 is higher than I...

Summer Lightning

Posted: 22 May 2021 01:40 PM PDT

Brewed this today
4.9kg Maris Otter
Challenger and EGK hops
1 hour mash and 10 min mash out
90 min boil
46g of challenger at 90 min
15g oh EKG at 10 min
Was meant to be 11g EKG at flame out which I managed to forget πŸ™„
Just wondering if to dry hop after 7 days with the remaining hops instead?
Would that make it too hoppy or would it work?
Any advice would be much appreciated

How long to sparge for.

Posted: 22 May 2021 01:30 PM PDT

Having watched a few Brewzilla videos, I'm still unsure how long the sparge should be for.

It seems to range from just jugging the water in, in a few minutes, to half an hour, and from using water from the tap to a specific temperature.

What do people do?
