Spent grain, compost bin and mice

Posted: 03 May 2021 08:33 PM PDT

I've always put my spent grain in the compost bin. This was fine at my old house - the bin was at the bottom of the garden, 50 yards from the house.
I've now moved and got one of those round, plastic bins which is quite close to the house - and I've got mice activity around it. They might even be nesting in it, for all I know. I assume that the mice are going for the grain, but what do I do? We get a weekly food bin collection but I can't really put 5kg or so of wet grain in it, can I?
Any...

How resilient is yeast?

Posted: 03 May 2021 04:53 PM PDT

Hi,

Got my Youngs Belgian Saison kit on today and just before pitching the yeast I noticed a small tear in the packet

IMG_20210503_121502572.jpg

I hadnt noticed this before and I'm not sure how long it has been like this. 5 hours after pitching it is bubbling away nicely at 28 degrees, but could this cause problems? It did smell like strong cheese, but maybe yeast does stink a bit.

Thanks,

Mark

Its generally agreed Orange Wine isn't very nice and few make it a second time the good news is the method used in the videos below is the same for all supermarket juice so if you are not keen on the sound of orange wine read on -

Some members are finding their supermarkets are not stocking White grape juice but have Red grape juice, Red grape juice goes well with apple, cranberry, pomegranate or raspberry...

Brewster Beacon 40 query

Posted: 03 May 2021 04:09 PM PDT

Well, I have bought myself a Beacon 40, so as to cut down on my extremely labour-intensive way of mashing, sparging and boiling. I was very happy with my method, but due to increasing decrepitude my body wasn't!!
However, I am surprised at the volume of water it seems to need for mashing. After cleaning it, and pumping out the rinse water, I thought I'd measure capacities. To get the water level to the bottom of the grain basket, I need to add 7·7l of water. Seems an awful lot of "void...

Is my fermentation fridge safe?

Posted: 03 May 2021 02:43 PM PDT

Hi,

I've managed to get hold of an old fridge to use for fermentation. I've taken the shelves and replace the glass bottom with a bit of wood to take the weight. There is space on both sides to let heat up from the heater tube. although I might stick with the belt for now as it has been good so far.

I have a 33 litre bucket for brewing 23l batches, but to get it to fit I had to remove the plastic housing on the side containing the thermostat, bulb etc. It looks like this at the minute...

Over pitching (yeast cake)

Posted: 03 May 2021 02:38 PM PDT

Did a PG Proper Job clone last night and went straight on my previous brews yeast cake (Safale 04). My Fermentation Fridge had a PB full of ale in so I just left it to do it's thing (was getting late and I was lazy) . Woke this morning to a volcano and a temp of 27'c (room is 20'c) .. Quick clean and it's now in the fridge with the inkbird set at 20'c. Do you guys think I will get off flavours in the brew because of yeast stress, or will i get away with it ?. It's the 1st time Iv gone...

Electric BIAB upgrade

Posted: 03 May 2021 02:31 PM PDT

Now then brewers,

Hope you're all well.

Just looking for some help with upgrading my electric BIAB system...

I currently use a 30L electric kettle for my mash/boil, 1 x 20L cooler to hold sparge water, 1 x 25L plastic fermenting bucket. With this system, I'm currently making decent beers at around 75% efficiency which seems good for BIAB systems.

The goals for the upgrade would be to:
  1. Have better temp. control - electric kettle seems to be hotter at the bottom (near heating...

I have got brewbuilders 3kW elements. What flex should be used? At moment the cable seems to be 90C heat resistant, 1.5mm 3 core, should I be using higher temperature rated cable and if so has anyone got a code for it? thanks

Been doing a bit of gardening lately and have 2 logs which the missus would turned into planters for display. So here's me starting and only basic tools allowed. Besides the sun is out and I'm alone for P&Q.
