Breweries are Ready to Blur the Line Between Wine and Beer

A growing number of breweries across the U.S. are producing beverages that blend the world of wine and beer. The breweries are working with wineries, vineyards, wine blenders, and wine grapes to create new offerings, including wine barrel-aged beers and wine-beer hybrids like Rosalie from Firestone Walker Brewing Company.

“There’s a real sense of authenticity to American wine and American beer," explained David Walker, Co-Owner of Firestone Walker. "Being able to combine the two — and someone will in a way that’s approachable — I see that as being a great fit. I don’t see how wine and beer can stay apart for long.”

For now, these innovative breweries are still looking for the right approach to educating consumers on these new options. “Our biggest worry is it’s going to fall into the uncanny valley where it’s not quite beer, not quite wine," said Bret Kollmann Baker, co-founder and head brewer at Urban Artifact Brewing in Cincinnati.
