Cleaning Hop Spiders

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 06:41 PM PDT

Hi all
Is there a trade secret to cleaning hop spiders at the end of a brew day. They're a pain in the **** !. Iv resorted to squeezing the outflow pipe of my wort chiller to do a "mini power wash". Any of u knowledgable people got a easier method to do it.

Fizzy stout.

Hello everyone.

I've just put a Mangrove Jack's Irish Stout (following the kit recipe) into the garage for the last 7 days of conditioning, that was bottled 10 days ago. Obviously had to test it.

It's too fizzy for a stout.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to how I can calm it down. My ideas were either to shake it well before opening or alternatively undoing the lids now in a hope that it flattens this week.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Phil.

Saison recipe

Hello all
Looking at my books and online Saison beers seem to primarily brewed with Pilsner malt...I don't have any...can I sub with pale?
If not I need some bits from MM so could wait til later to order to see if I can catch the window for malt orders...
I also have a load of frozen fruit off the allotment... raspberries, tayberries, gooseberries..can I use these?
What's your "go to" Saison?

Things to ponder with concern regarding the future

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 03:13 PM PDT

A few concerns of mine:

1) ERoEI (energy returned on energy invested). When more energy in one form is expended whereby to yield less energy in either the same or another form things get interesting. For but one example, if it takes more refined gasoline consumption whereby to extract crude oil from the ground than can then be converted into gasoline via processing and refining the extracted crude oil, then does it become game over for using gasoline power to extract crude oil?

2) What...

Family car recommendations?

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 03:11 PM PDT

My wife and I are going round and round circles....we need your help! Our current car, a VW Touran, needs a fair amount of money spending on it so we are looking to replace it. We've been happy with it, in particular the size, versatility and solid build. We've got 3 kids between 6 and 14, want petrol because we don't do huge numbers of miles and want 3 proper seats in the back. Could be labelled SUV, MPV or estate but we want plenty of boot space.

Got up to £15k to spend. What do you...

I think, in fact I know I am not the only member here who does a bit of cycling, maybe not all as obsessed as myself but nevertheless I thought anyone with an interest could post pictures of your bikes, it doesn't have to be an £10k super bike as long as you enjoy riding it, perhaps with a little bit about it or how you enjoy cycling.
So I have a few bikes and here is a handful of them..........

First my pride and joy the Ridley Noah SL, this aero bike took me to 10 race wins last year and...

Is capitalism exploiting you?

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 01:33 PM PDT

Here's the video saying it is:
Here's my response:
The employee is exploiting the capitalist's capital to maximise the value of there labour which would be worthless without the capitalists money/capital that they had to risk and likely alot of there own labour which they have not yet got any payment for. The employee can just walk in and demand a regular wage they get even at times the capitalist could be making a loss, they even get holiday and sick pay...

Recipe and water profiles

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 12:59 PM PDT

Hi everyone just received my brewzilla which i am looking forward to using. My main aim is bitters, hoppy ales and some lagers all to be used in conjunction with my beer engine. What i am looking for is suggestions of recipes along with water profiles to suit. I have various books Graham wheels and greg hughes for example but i suffer in finding decent water profiles to suit. I do use brunwater but find a lot of the profiles in there mainly aimed at the americans, no offence intended. many...

Low volume wort after boiling

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 12:44 PM PDT

Hi,
Can anyone offer some advice please.
I prepared my first all-grain brew last week and after mashing and sparging I had the recipes recommended 27L to boil, after boiling according to the recipe I should have been left with 21L but actually only had about 18L although the SG was as expected at 1.040.

I'm not sure whether I should have topped up the volume from 18L to 21L or just continued to ferment the 18L.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Recipe for Disaster!

So, the title sums this up very well.
I have a friend who is obsessed with foraging and they want me to make them a beer using white clover flowers that they have foraged in the beer. Yes, yes I know this sounds ridiculous.

Apparently, they're edible (although in warmer climates aren't) I've had a little nibble and they have a very mild honey flavour and fragrance and aren't too unpleasant. But they're pretty nondescript.

I'm going to humour them and do a 5-litre batch.

Time to join the crowd and start one of these brew day thread things :beer1:

This will be the first brew of 2020.

My parents are coming to stay with us at the end of February so I need to brew something that my dad will actually enjoy. He is a little bit stuck in his ways (it was only recently I converted him from Lager to drinking ales). That said, he has it in his head he doesn't like any grapefruit/citrus flavours in ales which pretty much restricts him to malty beers...
