beginner question

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 10:52 PM PDT

just about to start my first brew and trying to remember everything i have read and watch so far , so this question is probably a beginner one , Is it ok to do a boil with 2 gallons in one pan and then split the wort up into two 1 gallon demijohns for fermentation

Nitrates in water

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 10:31 PM PDT

Read this today, in a doc from Murphy & Sons:

Levels of Nitrate are beginning to drop generally due to greater control of the use of nitrogenous fertilisers. Nitrates themselves are not a problem at levels below 50 mgs/l, however they can be reduced by yeast or bacteria to form Nitrites. These ions can then react with wort amines to form Nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic.

Ooooofff - that's not good... my water report...

I have a terrible attitude towards water additions!

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 02:25 PM PDT

I keep reading posts, as in the 'Managing ph Levels' thread in this folder, which say things like "input your grist and water profile into Brewfather", or some such. And really, I don't want to do that. I've spent half a lifetime inputting stuff into various technical software, and don't want to do any more of that. You may well say, well, if he won't learn, he can't be taught, and I guess that's fair enough. But I don't think it's negatively impacted the beers I've brewed thus far.

Easy Keg how good

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 02:09 PM PDT

i Looking for a cheap alternative to bottling with similar results and came across the easy key Minikeg (brewuk.co.uk) they probably be other types or similar that might be better or the same but this is what i found , would be nice to hear from someone that has them or has used them in the past .

How much flavour/aroma hops is OK?

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 02:05 PM PDT

I've recently made a couple of IPAs and PAs and had an upfront paracetamol like upfront taste to the beer. I'm wondering if I'm hopping too heavy for my 20min and 0mim additions (only other addition at 60min). Been going with 6g at both 20min and 0min, about 1oz equivalent for a 20l batch.

Used different hops, pink boots versus Sybilla and Simcoe and had a similar result. Bottle after 2weeks and condition for another two before drinking.
I don't change my water chemistry, just use lactic...

Anyone have a Kegland Kegerator - question regarding keg sizes

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 01:56 PM PDT

Hi guys,
big birthday coming up and permission has been granted for a Kegland Kegerator. clapa

The latest Series X boasts it can hold 4 kegs but looking at specification it looks like Kegland kegs are slightly thinner (and taller) than the 'standard' AEB type Corny kegs I have.

Does anyone have experience of fitting non Kegland kegs into the Kegland Kegerator?

Or will I need to purchase the Kegland kegs in order to get the best use out of the Kegerator.

Plaato Keg

Hi all,

I have two Plaato Kegs I just never use. One is unboxed and the other has been used only a handful of times.

They were purchased beginning of 2020.

Open to offers.

MJ Pink Grapefruit is on!

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:51 PM PDT

Started my 6th kit today, the MJ grapefruit one. Really hope I nail this one as 4 of my earlier kits were a bit of a letdown, the 5th is too early to tell yet.
I think I fell into every newbie trap out there. I'm a real fiddler and kept taking the lid off the FV to look and sniff, give it a stir and even add more yeast.
I even transferred from the FV to a bottling bucket by turning the tap on and let it gush down into it!
I used plastic tonic bottles, without squeezing out the air. Didn't...

Covid the jab and the final stage.

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:36 PM PDT

SWMBO is a front line worker (carer) she has had the first jab and is now tested twice a week she also has the lateral flow test with the results showing 30 minutes after the test whenever she goes to work on the other days, there are no cases of Covid where she works and there hasn't been for quite a while.

I am hoping as a front line worker my turn will come soon my age will also help, its not often i am glad i am an old fart. :laugh8:

Bottling a Triple NEIPA

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:36 PM PDT

Okay so I've made a Triple 10% New England IPA BIAB as my second brew ever. I know I know I went in at the deep end but go big or go home! I just thought I would keep a record of any change in colour and oxidation on here and if you're interested just follow along.

Ask me any questions!

The picture is an undercarbed (4days 30mins in the freezer test PET bottle) sample of the beer and my god if it stays like this for 2 weeks with a little more carbonation I'm a happy boy!

Joke of the day.

A joke to take the minds off the worriers and whittlers, who think we are all going to be wiped out with plagues pestilence and the off chance of a collision with a asteroid.

In a small village in Russia the village milking cow dried up, the villagers were panicking wondering what to do. A village elder suggested they go and see the wise man of the woods, so they traipsed up to where the wise man of the woods lived. They explained the problem they had with the cow and he told them they...
