Low Alcohol Wine Grows Nearly 100% in U.S. in 2020

The “Better For You” wine category increased almost 100% in 2020 compared to the previous year, according to Nielsen. Consumers have cited the shift to at-home drinking, pursuing a healthier lifestyle, and the desire for easier-drinking alternatives as rationale for their interest in wines with lower alcohol, fewer calories, and less carbohydrates.

However, the wine industry has found difficulty adding entries to the “Better For You” category, as these options tend to have higher price points and may have issues with flavor after removing alcohol. Brands like Yellow Tail have put years into research to overcome these obstacles and meet the demand.

“Until now, lower calorie wines have been seen as light on flavor,” said Casella Family Brands Managing Director John Casella. “That was a trade-off we weren’t willing to make. We took the opposite approach, ensuring great taste and then working our way backward to deliver on making it lighter.”
