Brew off 2021 returns

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 02:29 PM PDT

The next instalment of the 4 way brew off series has been agreed.

@Leon103 @dan125 @dave_77 and myself @Hoddy will be entering into the next round of the brew off series independently judged by @beerison

The next round is simply "uk hops" that's it. No style restrictions or ABV to follow. Just Uk hops only.

Who will triumph this time. Only time will tell.

Blackberry season

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 02:15 PM PDT

Picked a few of the first ripe Blackberries today and it's got me thinking about using them in beers. I love Blackberries, wheat beers and plum porter so the obvious plans are a blackberry porter and possibly a blackberry wheat.

Am I right in thinking the best way is to rack to a secondary after initial fermentation, onto some frozen blackberries?

I've done a couple of stouts but haven't done a porter so not sure what I'd need for a porter. Wheat beers I can do OK.

Does anybody have good...

Roof Mounted Wind Turbine....

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 02:12 PM PDT

Hi all,

Odd question perhaps but does anyone know anything about these?

We are going to get some solar panels soon but this being the UK it won't be enough to power our home throughout the winter and I was looking into roof mounted wind turbines, about the 1kw range. I've read the rules and regs and it seems we would be ok getting one and we definitely live in a windy enough area but I can't seem to find much info from people who have them. What I can find is quite mixed, ranging from...

I have seen this on another forum and its popular so will give it a go here.

It doesn't need to be beer related anything goes, it also doesn't need to match any of the words in the previous post.

I will start it with -

Kings Head (pub)

What about this for the name of a pub?

Blue Stone IPA

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 02:00 PM PDT

Spent the last week in Pembrokeshire where I was lucky enough to try a fantastic IPA and PA by Blue Stone brewery based in Newport. Two very nice fruity beers that I would love to have a go at brewing.

Has anyone got any idea which hops are used in these beers?

foxbat's brewdays

I thought I might as well join the fun and post my own brewday log here in the forum. Today is an experimental bitter with the following recipe. I've never used Northdown before but Fullers use it and I very much enjoy a pint of Pride. I've also never added Chocolate malt to a bitter before but it's there in one of my favourite bitters of late: Darkstar Partridge so I'm putting the two together and doing this today:

85% Pale Malt
10% Munich Malt
3% Crystal 240 EBC
2% Low colour chocolate...

Grain substitutes

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:25 PM PDT

Hi there,

I'm still very much treading the thin line of all grain brewing, and this will be my 3rd attempt.

I'm having trouble sourcing some of the grains used in some of the IPA recipes I'm finding. Most of them are American, and some of the grain types don't seem to be available here in the UK

I was wondering if anyone has found a UK source for the following, or could suggest a suitable alternative malt:

Honey
White wheat
Crystal malt 60L (presume any old medium crystal will do for...

Which movie(s) have you watched recently?

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:10 PM PDT

I'm a bit of a cinephile, movies are probably my second love after brewing, I have a "watchlist" which is almost as long as my "brewlist" and I try to watch a couple of films off it each week.

I'm always open for suggestions and love hearing what people have watched recently, what their opinion was and why.

With such a melange of people on the forum I'm sure I'm not the only one, so what are you watching, or have you watched recently?

I'll go first, last night I watched...

Closed Transfer From Bucket to Corny Keg

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:05 PM PDT

I thought I'd add this here as a work in progress. After brewing for nearly 3 years I'm now in the process of getting started with corny kegs and I was struggling to find a "how to" on the web to do a closed transfer from a bucket without a tap at the bottom.

I'll state for the record that I'm learning/figuring out as I go - if there are any obvious better ways to do stuff, suitable gadgets or gizmos, or obvious problems I've not thought of then all input is welcome! Currently...

R.I.P Thread.

We had a request earlier form a member asking if we could have a forum in General Discussions specifically for posts of peoples/celebrities passing (including forum members where appropriate and permission granted) it has been decided that the topic is not big enough to warrant its own forum so we have decided to make this pinned thread instead.

Could i ask members to quote the post they are answering or the thread could get a little confusing if more than one person dies in a short period...

Hop Water

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 11:22 AM PDT

Came across something new this weekend called Hop Water. My first thought was "great just another bland tasting seltzer". I couldn't have been more wrong. When I poured it into a glass I was blown away by the aroma. It's as good as any quality IPA. Lots of grapefruit, tropical fruits, and piney notes. It reminds me of ginger ale with a hint of sweetness. It has medium carbonation and a decent mouthfeel. It's zero sugar and zero carbs. I'm Definitely buying another four pack. I'll probably...

Shelf life in cans...

Posted: 15 Aug 2021 10:41 AM PDT

How are small breweries getting such a long shelf life when canning their beers? I've seen lots of canned beers that haven't been pasteurised with best before dates of 12-18 months, even beers like NEIPA's.
