Force Carbonation Tips ✨

I keg all my homebrew. Of course, I started with bottling, as we all do. But as you know, bottling takes a long time. Not to mention waiting for it to carbonate.

The impatient brewer has a hard time waiting for their kegged beers to carbonate even though it's much quicker than bottling.

So I want to give you three ways I carbonate my beers in the keg and the reasons why I do it. And remember, these methods work best when the beer is cold.

1. Set It And Forget It
All you have to do is hook your beer up to CO2 at normal serving pressure (10 - 15 PSI) and wait for 7-10 days for it to carbonate. This is the best way to force carbonate a beer, in my opinion. And you can dial in the exact level of CO2 by using a chart like the one in this article.

When I'm not in a hurry to drink, or my beer is still young, I'll use this method. And the carbonation level always comes out perfect.

2. Burst Carbonation
Hook your beer up to CO2 and crank the pressure to 30 - 40 PSI. Let it sit for 24-48 hours. Then, purge the keg and bring the pressure back to severing PSI.

This method was made famous by Brulosophy. And I use it whenever I want to tap a keg for immediate consumption. Mainly for fresh New England IPAs.

3. Shake Carbonation
Again, hook your beer up to CO2 and crank the pressure to 30 PSI. This time, you can either rock or roll the keg. This agitation allows the CO2 to absorb faster into the beer. I usually shake for about 3-5 minutes.

Then, you have to let the beer settle for at least 30 minutes before bringing the pressure down and serving. Or else it'll be foam city!

I only do this method in a pinch. It works, but it's fickle. You could over-carbonate your homebrew. Which again; foam city!
