New to cider making

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 09:27 PM PDT

Hi all,
i am completely new to cider making (not cider drinking). I just got a mangrove jacks starter kit which came with a sachet of apple cider. I have made this up but I am already researching my next brew. I've heard that using apple juice and yeast is the way to go rather than the concentrate packs from mangrove jacks. I want to get a cider similar to a mercury draught cider. Does anyone have any suggestions on type of yeast etc to use? And also how much to use, I have a 30 Litre...

G'day

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 09:21 PM PDT

Hello all,
Im a new member, I have done a handful of extract brews over the years, but nothing for 15 years. I am getting back into it with AG BIAB, and will do my 3rd pale ale mash this weekend.
Really enjoying the process so far and am looking forward to learning more as I continue with brewing my own.
I am a devout Coopers pale ale drinker and am presently trying to get a brew similar drinking to this. I honestly think this is Australia's best commercial beer and feel it would be a great...

Scalping

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 08:17 PM PDT

Aye, a word often we see these days pertaining to computer parts - namely graphics cards and chippaggedon. But what I have noticed of late is that some scalpers are moving on to pieces of homebrew kit and selling them at inflated prices - just like anything else they wanna inflate the price of these days. Be careful out there. If need be, do more of a thorough search for your gear and don't get conned =)

Boredom brew!

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 08:13 PM PDT

So today I was at a loose end for a while and I wanted to make another brew but didn't have much in. So knocked this up quickly from stuff I had lying around.

It is:-

1.3kg sugar
Zest and juice of 2 oranges
2 tbsp vanilla extract
Cup of tea
1 tbsp glycerine
Pectolase
Yeast nutrient
Youngs super wine yeast compound

The must tastes of orange and vanilla (almost caramelly) and is quite nice at the moment. Will see how/if fermentation changes the flavours.

I thought vanilla and orange...

What was your first step towards AG?

Chemsan neutralised by tap water?

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 04:00 PM PDT

Hi All

Just did a ph paper test on diluted Chemsan using my tap water, not too cloudy but worryingly - shows a 6

I understand Chemsan is only effective at a ph of 3 or below.

What should I do in future? Change to bottled mineral water? Is my equipment UNsanitary?

My beer is near ready to bottle, my equipment was sanitised without realising this issue with the ph. Is there likely to be a problem?

I had a look in fermenter when adding hops, smells okay looks okay.

Am I being a paranoid...

Social media abuse

Three Liverpool players Alexander Arnold, Kieta and Mane have been subjected to racial abuse on social media. This follows players at United, Villa and Brentford. This has to be stopped and the perpetrators severely dealt with. The SM companies know who these sick individuals are and must pass this info to the local police.

Mangrove Jacks Pink Grapefruit IPA Beer Kit + Free Enhancer

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 02:56 PM PDT

I brewed this a few weeks ago, the thing that sold it to me were the free enhancer and the fact that it said it was in the style of "Brew Dog Elvis Juice"

It was my first beer kit, I normally do WOW rose and red wine kits.

The first thing that got my attention was the smell and taste of the extract in the bag - very pungent and I could definitely taste the grapefruit.

I followed the kit to the letter and had high hopes due to the aromas coming my FV. The Fv was placed in a 42l tough tub...

Retailers "own brand" kits

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 02:55 PM PDT

Hi all

Apart from the likes of love brewing's beerworks craft series kits and the bruphoria range from the homebrew company, does anyone know of other online shops selling similar kits?

Not looking for any inclusions of steeping grains or hops to boil, just plain old mix extract with water, ferment then dry hop when appropriate.

I've scoured the net but those two companies are the only ones I can see that fit the bill.

Cheers. Tom

Are dry hops over rated?

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 01:16 PM PDT

I first heard of dry hopping in the 1980s and have used it in nearly every brew since. Until recently, when I've dropped the dry hopping and brewed what I consider better beer. They are plenty hoppy enough and the hop flavours persist for a long time. I find the later the hops, the quicker the effect fades. I used bittering hops today then 100g of Mosaic evenly split at 15, 10, 5 Nd flameout, without pre cooling.
At the risk of summoning the devil it's worth noting that UK breweries...

Relative Beginner Looking for a bit of advice

Hi all and welcome to my first post, apologies its so long
I'm fairly new to this but have made a couple of Youngs 7 day kits which where far to sweet for me and more like a Rose. There was also a few errors in taking SG readings etc. I moved up to an On the house product which has turned out a lot better than the previous kits (Perhaps less errors as well as a better kit). I have now bought a wine expert stags leap 8 week kit, the first two weeks have gone well and the correct SG of 0.996...
