New user looking for beer gas in Melbourne

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:48 PM PDT

Hi all,

Long time browser of the forums but first time poster. I've been brewing pale ales quite successfully for a while now and have my methods and techniques all pretty much sorted after a few false starts and I now want to move onto a Guinness style stout but the one thing holding me back is the dispensing aspect as I just cannot find anywhere to get "Beer Gas" without having to pay bottle rental. Does anybody know where I can buy a bottle for a swap 'n' go exchange in the Melbourne area?

No Chill Cubes

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:58 AM PDT

How often do you no chill brewers replace your cube? Mine is looking a little bit brown in spots and was wondering if it needs replacing. I haven't had a lot of success in getting rid of discoloration by cleaning. By the same token I haven't noticed any real problems with my beer yet.

Has anyone been brewing a SMaSH

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:01 PM PDT

As the title says, anyone been doing a Single Malt and Single Hop brew of late??? Or perhaps some hop water for example too?

I've recently been reading about this stuff and wondering how often you guys do either of these and what are you or have been doing?

I do like the idea of the hop water that makes you feel buzzed or slightly drunk but has no alcohol in it hehe =)

What kit beer are you drinking tonight?

So who's growing chillies 2021?

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I am! But then I do every year 🙂.

It's always tough to select what to grow but I've got Dorset Naga, Michael's Magic, Turtle Claw, Jamaican Jerk (all capsicum chinense), Tropical Orange (capsicum pubescens), and Madre Vieja (capsicum baccatum) in the propagator with reasonable germination so far.

I'll get my capsicum annuum sown at the start of March (they don't need so long a growing season) but haven't quite decided what I'll grow yet.

What are you growing / will you grow this year?

Peco EB1B boiler

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:40 PM PDT

Does anyone have one of these? I'm starting in all grain for the first time and this was going cheap and I got one, however there are no controls, you just plug it in. As such, I'm not really sure how to best use it when making the wort. Can anyone provide an explanation for best use?

Thanks

Is my fermentation fridge safe?

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:34 PM PDT

Hi,

I've managed to get hold of an old fridge to use for fermentation. I've taken the shelves and replace the glass bottom with a bit of wood to take the weight. There is space on both sides to let heat up from the heater tube. although I might stick with the belt for now as it has been good so far.

I have a 33 litre bucket for brewing 23l batches, but to get it to fit I had to remove the plastic housing on the side containing the thermostat, bulb etc. It looks like this at the minute...

Better Brew Czech pilsner

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:38 PM PDT

Started this kit last night , not done one of this brand before but the 2.1kg of pre hopped malt comes in a handy easy to use pouch with a screw cap fastened to it, an impressive 10g satchet of yeast(ale yeast). I added 500g Light DME and 500g table sugar, I've started using water straight from the tap where as I used to add a quart crushed campden tab but stopped as our water tastes great and not noticed any difference. OG 1047 ,placed in water bath in garage and shall leave it now for 2 weeks.

Belgian Ale success!

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:37 PM PDT

AT the end of September I decided to make my first attempt at a temparature stepped mash. I used a recipe for De Konick Belgian ale, which uses lager ingredients but a top-fermenting ale yeast. Here's the recipe (from Wheler and Protz). I got 9 litres out of this (I was hoping for 10 - 12 litres), partly due to syphoning and general incompetance problems:
2kg Lager Malt
650g Vienna Malt
30g Chocolate Malt
30g Saaz hops (start of boil)
Irish Moss
1/2 sachet Mangrove Jacks M41 Belgian Ale...

Game-Changing Brewing Gear

I'm a gear head. I see a new product in a brewing magazine, and I buy it. Or I read a blog, see a new gadget, and I must have it.

If I don't like a product, I'll return it or sell it. But thankfully, I haven't had to do that often. However, there are a few products that are...fine. But some are game-changers in my brew day.

And today, I want to share a few of my favorite brewing tools.

Thermapen
$90 for a meat thermometer?! But I bought it anyway, thinking it better be good. And it blew me away!

As an amateur chef, I've thrown away a lot of shitty thermometers. And I've used so many and never considered how slow it was to read the damn temp. But when I started using the Thermapen, it was instantly clear how superior it is for measuring mash temps.

It's always accurate, and it's the most reliable brewing tool I own. I now own two: for cooking and brewing.

Jaded Chiller
I love immersion chillers over plate and counterflow. Why? Because it's easier to clean and more control over temp. For instance, if I want to drop the temp after my boil for a whirlpool hop addition, I can do that. Technically you can do that with the other chillers, but I find it easier with an immersion.

However, most chillers take a long time and a lot of water to chill down your wort. But I invested in a Jaded chiller and can now chill down 6 gallons of wort in under 5 minutes with their immersion chillers.

They're not cheap but well worth the month: well-built, fast-chilling, and less water.

Duo Tight Fittings and Eva Barrier Tubing
For over ten years, I've used your standard beer line tubing for my kegerator. Plus a bunch of clamps. And I do my best to keep my beer lines cleaner. Probably better than most. You know who you are!

But holy shit, these Duo Tight Fittings combined with the Eva Barrier Tubing (both of which you can find on MoreBeer.com).

The beer lines are easier to manage in the fridge, the connections are easier to make and maintain, and balancing the kegs is much better. My beers are pouring with a lot less foam these days. But this could be a full email in and of itself.

If you're interested in draft line maintenance and balancing, let me know.

Also, if you want more of my recommended brewing products, check out my gear page here. Also, I don't accept free gear for review. I buy everything with my own money after a bunch of research. I don't want my brewery filling up with a bunch of free gear that I never use.
Happy Brewing!

Red/Amber Pale ale critique

Posted: 29 Apr 2021 04:15 PM PDT

I'm planning a brew for Sunday and after too much deliberation I have settled on a Red/Amber pale ale. Can someone take a look to see if it look OK?

BTW, I'm remote so don't have ready access to a HBS, but I do have Carafa Special II, Brown, and CaraAroma malts if they'll help.
