Gulden Draak in a GF Posted: 25 Apr 2021 07:18 PM PDT I've been looking for a way to brew the beer but the grain bill would force low efficiency in my GF. But I have a cunning plan :- Calculations. The recipe is for 5 US Gal and has an OG of 1.096 this includes 3lb of Candy Syrup. The contribution of the syrup in 5gal is 1.019 (Brewers Friend calculator) therefore the grain contributed (at 75% mash efficiency) 1.096-1.019 = 1.077 units. Boil off over 90mins should be 0.6 US Gal therefore the preboil gravity should be 1.068 (5/5.6*77)... Gulden Draak in a GF

Homemade boiler Posted: 25 Apr 2021 02:16 PM PDT Hi all, Spent the afternoon putting together a homemade boiler, I used a Youngs FV and a couple kettle element from the Tesco value range. You can pick them up for around £7 each. Tested and both powering on not taken it to the boil yet. Seen a post on here of someone doing this previously so thought I'd give it a blast. Still have to cover the external power connections. I've got a couple of Voltage regulators on the way so I can have a controlled boil without over stressing the... Homemade boiler

What did you do today? Posted: 25 Apr 2021 12:33 PM PDT Well today I went at my taps and keggerator with Ernest pulling them apart as they have been out of use for a few months. Dismantled both taps to clean in a mixture of fairy and oxi and the amount of gunk wet and dried that came off was disgusting and didn't even take a picture but take my word. Anyway cleaned and sanitised as is the keggerator and a full keg of Pale Ale I brewed in October which I sampled last night and will murder after I've transferred a lager to keg and start cold... What did you do today?

The Endless Possibilities of Non-Alcoholic Drinks Posted: 25 Apr 2021 04:12 AM PDT Photo courtesy of Minu Han / Reception Bar For me, it's never been about the buzz, but the tang of the drink. I remember my last glass of wine perfectly: I went to dinner at an Italian restaurant in New York City's East Village with a few friends, where we split a delicious bottle of Merlot. After our feast, we went to a concert in the Lower East Side where we drank a few more glasses of the house red. By the time I got home, the wine was completely out of my system. While tending to my irritated bowels the next morning, I decided to try drinking other things for a while. When you're writing about culture somewhere like New York, the social scene does not always cater to your lifestyle choices. It wasn't until I became a regular at Reception Bar that I saw the possibilities of non-alcoholic drinks. It was there I realized that I could still taste for structure, balance and finish. Every ingredient counts. It's so refreshing to pop one of these bottles to make the most ordinary meals feel like a special occasion. The growing availability of nonalcoholic wines and wine alternatives transported me to a whole new world that tastes better than I could have ever imagined. I've come to appreciate innovative brands like Ghia, Yesfolk Tonics, Tart Vinegar and Acid League, which provides sophisticated takes on the red, white and orange wines that I miss. My personal favorite is the Cuvée Zero, which is bursting with the succulent flavors of beets, blueberries and red fruits that mimic the taste of Pinot Noir. The floral notes are balanced out by herbs and spices, so the sweetness doesn't overpower such a multilayered blend. It's so refreshing to pop one of these bottles to make the most ordinary meals feel like a special occasion—I have even converted my very pro-wine drinking parents to sometimes share the Proxies with me.
