Extending my mash time

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 05:11 PM PDT

Hi,
I'm thinking of organising my brew day around general life with kids. I've been reading around about extending my mash time (from 60 mins to maybe 2 hrs) and I've come to the conclusion that this will be fine. However, before doing this I thought I'd quickly ask what other think.

My plan of action is to put the mash on around 5pm and leave the grain and water well insulated and alone until around 7pm. The temperature will drop but as it should be within the mash temp. range for an hour...

Initial thoughts on BIAB in Klarstein Fullhorn

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 02:59 PM PDT

Just thought I would share some feedback having done a couple of all-grain recipes in my Klarstein Fullhorn in case it should prove useful to anyone.

The unit has a capacity of 26.7L to the full line when the bazooka and false bottom are fitted. Approximately 1 litre of wort is retained unless the unit is tipped.

It takes around 1 hour to heat 25L of 7'C water to 100'C. (I just wondered!)

Mash can be maintained circa 66'C using just the 900W element. Rolling boil can be maintained using...

Completed AG Recipe Kits-GEB/MM

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 02:32 PM PDT

Been a bit slack with posting up my brew day activity etc since I became more active on the forum. So here's a couple of posts on Ag brew kits from Get Er Brewed which have served me pretty well. As a new AG brewer I leaned towards these kits as it takes away a bit of stress regarding recipe creation enabling you to concentrate on your methods/processes whilst getting to know your equipment...
Maybe others can recommend or give feedback on these type of kits. As I've found them to be pretty...

Dry hopping experiment - good or bad idea?

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 02:26 PM PDT

I made a Bulldog Brews Premium IPA kit. The fermentation went well (based on hydrometer readings the ABV is 5.8%) and the beer looks good in the bottle, however it lacks taste and is a frankly underwhelming experience. In fact the best way to drink it seems to be to treat it like a lager and have it cold with some spicy food.

It appears to be a kit that cries out for a bit of pimping, which has me thinking about experimenting with some of the bottles as follows:

1) Chill bottle
2) Open...

I've just seen the latest grolsch and on TV. They claim it is double brewed, what does that actually mean?

Hopsteep Brewing

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 02:14 PM PDT

Time to join the crowd and start one of these brew day thread things :beer1:

This will be the first brew of 2020.

My parents are coming to stay with us at the end of February so I need to brew something that my dad will actually enjoy. He is a little bit stuck in his ways (it was only recently I converted him from Lager to drinking ales). That said, he has it in his head he doesn't like any grapefruit/citrus flavours in ales which pretty much restricts him to malty beers...

Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 02:01 PM PDT

Hey there folks.
I just started my first grow of the plants i purchased from essentially hops. At the start i have to mention that i am really pleased with the grow. The plants arrived wrapped in separate packages surrounded by moss for keeping them moist. The plants were labeled and had a instructions included clearly saying what soil to use and etc.

The rhizomes were planted on the day they arrived...

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 01:54 PM PDT

Tried to make a batch of fruit tea wine tried n tested recipe20 fruit tea bags from Lidl but ............. started out out ok was fermenting nicely for about a week .Fermentation suddenly stopped .Used Youngs super yeast compound first reading was 1100 now 1070 .Did 2 batches of 4 litres 1.250 kilos sugar in each both stopped .Wrongly or rightly added another spoonful of yeast but still dead Temp was a steady 24 % .Any ideas ?

Common word pairs.

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 01:53 PM PDT

I have seen this on another forum and its popular so will give it a go here.

It doesn't need to be beer related anything goes, it also doesn't need to match any of the words in the previous post.

I will start it with -

Hi chaps. Thanks for allowing me to join your crew. I am retired and in my 70s and have been brewing since the mid 60s. I now live on a farm in Portugal and have planted a few vines, but the one thing that I miss is real best Bitter. Cold larger is fine on a hot day ( and we have plenty of those). There are a couple of English pubs with cask beers ( when they can get it)..but I haven't had a good real ale for over a year.
I have a still and make madronia, the local hooch for the winter. (...

Home brew "twang"

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 01:06 PM PDT

Every beer I brew has the same after taste to greater or lesser degree. The pilsner I am drinking as we speak isn't bad but has that classic after taste.

Been in the bottle 2 months now..must can't shake it. The beer would be awesome if it wasn't for that. Doesn't matter what I brew, how I brew it or how well I sanitise.

Please help...wish you could taste to understand

Conditioning times (force carb in keg)

Posted: 12 Jun 2021 12:13 PM PDT

Looking at the Greg Hughes book, for most of the bitter recipes he seems to recommend 4-6 weeks conditioning at 12ºC.
I'm wondering whether that period assumes the brewer will be bottling and adding sugar; whereas I'm fully fermenting then kegging and force carbonating.

I've noticed that the beer does seem to improve after a couple of months in the keg - but not so much as to stop me beginning to drink it earlier ;)

Ta for any advice
