Lallemand Philly Sour yeast

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 06:21 PM PDT

I couldn't find an existing thread in the yeast section, apologies if there is one...

Anyone got experience with this?

I brewed a 80% pils 20% sucrose test batch and threw 2 packs of philly sour on it at 25 degrees. After 6 days it's down to 1.010 and has a very nice tartness.

Haven't tested with my ph meter yet but confident it is more sour than any kettle sour I've done with lactobacillus plantarum.

I've just thrown some passionfruit on it and I'm very excited about this one. Wrong...

4 day bank holiday.

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:35 PM PDT

Queen's platinum jubilee to be marked with four-day bank holiday in 2022 (The Guardian)

A four-day bank holiday weekend will mark the Queen's platinum jubilee next summer to celebrate the monarch's 70 years on the throne.

National events will include a live concert featuring some of the world's biggest stars, a service of thanksgiving and, perhaps the Queen's own highlight, a day at the races.

The 2022 break will run from Thursday 2 June until Sunday 5 June, with the...

Hazelwood Brewday

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:23 PM PDT

I only joined the group a few days ago and today was my first brewday since joining so I thought I ought to give this a go - at least once.

Starting with the crime scene, I revamped our garden a couple of years ago. My wife wanted decking, a gazebo, and comfortable seating, I wanted a bar, win-win!

So this is where I also brew, at my bar, shown here in winter plumage (clear plastic PVC tarps fitted to two sides).

Bottling a Triple NEIPA

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:17 PM PDT

Okay so I've made a Triple 10% New England IPA BIAB as my second brew ever. I know I know I went in at the deep end but go big or go home! I just thought I would keep a record of any change in colour and oxidation on here and if you're interested just follow along.

Ask me any questions!

The picture is an undercarbed (4days 30mins in the freezer test PET bottle) sample of the beer and my god if it stays like this for 2 weeks with a little more carbonation I'm a happy boy!

Plastic coopers brown bottles , crap ?

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:07 PM PDT

I've had a few cartons of these over the years and I'm gonna chuck them now

Never get cold enough and I often find the taste in them isn't up to scratch, getting the tips off about takes skin off me hands and need molegrips to take the damn things off

More than enough bottles now and swing tops so it's adiós to them

Conditioning blonde Ale

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:43 PM PDT

Hi all

My brother asked me to brew a beer especially for a "big weekend" we are having at his house.

I made a blonde (my own recipe) with the following:

4kg maris otter
500g vienna
250g of oats
CML general ale yeast

Went in the fermenter last night and is now going great guns bubbling like crazy. However, this beer has to be ready for 26th june leaving me approx 3 weeks from bottling to drinking...is this enough and do you have any tips on how to maximise conditioning in this time...

Beer is fermenting but gravity remains the same

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:30 PM PDT

Reet, so I am fermenting an imp stout in a keg and using an iSpindel to record the gravity. The OG was 1.090 and fermentation started off well. When the blow-off tube stopped bubbling, the gravity was 1.030 and it is supposed to be 1.017. I raised the temp on Sunday and fermentation appeared to start up again. The blow-off tube was producing a bubble every ten seconds or so. However the gravity has barely changed. The lowest the iSpindel has reported is 1.028 but sometimes it says 1.030. I...

Overflow pipe. All in one.

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:22 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I've bought a brewmonk all in one and want to brew at the weekend. This might be a stupid question considering the name overflow pipe but is liquid actually supposed to flow into the overflow pipe during the mash? The reason I ask is because in the manual it says adjust the telescopic overflow pipe to 3-4cm above the water volume. I've looked on YouTube and some have the liquid flowing into the pipe and others have it well above the water volume. Just wondering if anyone...

What are People's Experiences of Using Windsor Yeast?

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:41 PM PDT

Just tried pitching Windsor for the first time on the understanding that it gives a good flavoured beer with low attenuation, but without leaving the beer tasting sweet. So I knocked up a pale ale with an OG of 1040 and pitched the yeast Sunday afternoon. Astonished to find the gravity had dropped to 1006 this morning, after only 2½ days.

Mashed overnight at 66C- this may be a factor.
Have checked hydrometer calibration.
Pitched at 25C and brought temp down to 22C and then 19-20C
The beer...

Grainfather equipment profile (brewfather)

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:38 PM PDT

Hi Grainfather users,
I've got a GF on the way, and I'm wondering about how accurate the default equipment profile is in Brewfather, and whether these numbers tally with peoples experiences with the GF:
Boil off rate: 3 L/h (presumably this is without the graincoat. Does anyone adjust with the graincoat?)
Dead space: 3.5 L (I believe this is the volume under and around the grain basket, not the irrecoverable volume that can't be transferred to the FV)
Grain absorption: 0.8 L/kg
Trub loss: 1L...

Charging soda stream bottles

Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:33 PM PDT

I share a 6kg CO2 cylinder with a mate and we both have Sodastream bottles and want to recharge our Sodastream bottles from the big cylinder. We purchased the adapter but nothing seems to happen. The adapter has a straight through bore through the centre with no central pin to engage with the Sodastream valve so wonder if we've got the correct adapter? It has no screw thread so doesn't look like there are any components missing and they're both the later Sodastream bottles. We hook...

Upgrade Your Brew Day Precision

Hey there!

Our homebrewer's toolkit is a bit like Batman's utility belt, although we don't generally fight crime at night while dressed as a symbol of childhood trauma. Our rig has tools for just about every conceivable brewing situation. And while some, like our custom beer-shaped "brewarangs" don't get used very often, we rely on our hydrometer every single brewing day.

Precision matters when you wanna make tasty beer, and using a hydrometer the right way helps us hit our gravity targets. It'll help you hit yours, too. And while you're in Caped Crusader mode, why not find out how to build your own homebrewing laboratory? Or better still, put together a state-of-the-art, computer-controlled brewery that'll fit in your garage, stately manor, or hidden cave? You're on the hook for your own cape, though.

Yes, the rumors are true. We've been watching our weight. Well, not our weight, really. In fact, we may or may not be eating a cheeseburger wrapped in a pizza as we write this. What we are watching is the weight of our grains, hops, and adjuncts. Brewing is a science, and guesswork doesn't do beer any favors.

A digital scale can give you the edge when you're crafting a fine and tasty homebrew. Precision measurements make for better beer, every time. That goes for hydrometers and thermometers, too. And don't forget to check your water chemistry. Depending on your water source and beer style, pH levels can make or break your beer—especially if you're brewing a sour beer to go with, say, a giant pizza burger.

Happy Brewing!

Athletic Brewing Secures $50 Million in Series C Funding

Volume 314 | June 2, 2021
Athletic Brewing Secures $50 Million in Series C Funding

As non-alcoholic beers continue to gain traction, non-alcoholic beer brand Athletic Brewing has raised $50 million in Series C funding. The funding will be used to support the brewer’s East Coast expansion through construction of a manufacturing facility in Connecticut. Athletic's total funding to date is $70 million.

Sales of non-alcoholic craft beer have grown 430% year-over-year, according to data from Nielsen, and Athletic Brewing currently claims half of the segment. Athletic produced roughly 40,000 barrels of beer last year, but it was not enough to keep up with demand, according to co-founder and CEO Bill Shufelt. The new manufacturing facility will be its third.
