Staff Profile - Gavon

Gavon has been with Brewshop for over five years. He first got started with brewing after a friend showed him how he could brew beer from grains rather than cans and sugar, and it sounded like an interesting idea. As a stay-at-home dad, he was often making sour dough, hard cheeses and croissants, and so added brewing to the mix. Now that he brews more regularly, making cheese has fallen away but he still makes the occasional sourdough loaf.

Most of the time, Gavon likes brewing tricky beers. He also likes to tinker with fittings and bits to get the best out of them.

Cheers,

The Brewshop Team

Mix Things Up With First Wort Hopping

Hey there!

While sampling our latest brew, we dreamt up a surefire Hollywood hit. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Mark "Let's Pretend Good Vibrations Never Happened" Wahlberg, The Hoppening is a suspenseful tale of people putting their hops in the kettle before they boil the wort—AKA first wort hopping. The twist ending: there is no twist. MADNESS!

OK, so there's a reason we're not famous screenwriters. But first wort hopping does have a certain mystery. Fans swear it tempers the hops and improves flavor. And this unorthodox technique has some other benefits, too. While you investigate, take a peek at eight hop varieties straight from Oz. And if you're looking to shake up your hop game another way, learn how cryogenics are driving a new era of high-quality hop options for homebrewers.

Happy Brewing!

Champagne Makes 180 Degree Turn in Performance

Champagne Makes 180 Degree Turn in Performance

The Comité Champagne has declared champagne is back to growth after an 18% decline in 2020. For the months of April and May champagne shipments increased by 200% and 150%. If the current level of growth is maintained, champagne may return to its pre-Covid global market size of almost 300 million bottles in annual shipments by the end of the year.

“It is a 180 degree turn relative to what we had one year ago at the same time, when we were stuck and there were dark days ahead,” said Francois Van Aal, chairman of Lanson. “But now the market is reopening and it might come back stronger and bigger.”
