Lactic Acid 88% How much is too much to reduce pH

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 10:50 PM PDT

First post long time reader......
I've been brewing all-grain for over a year now using a 65L Brewzilla.
I'm very new at experimenting with water salt additions to the mash.

I'm a little concerned with the amount of lactic acid that my recipe from Brewfather calculated (16.8ml for a 50L batch) to bring down my pH level to 5.2pH.
Looking to brew tomorrow so I've already purchased my grain bill, concerned with the 16.8ml of lactic acid and if you'll be able to taste the acid in the finial...

Free Fridges - Cranbourne

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 08:59 PM PDT

Hi,
I've got two fridges up for grabs. One has a freezer too. Both work, but I don't have room for them at my place. Already have two fridges and a chest freezer here. GF would kill me if i added more.
They are located in Cranbourne, Vic, at my dads place. He is moving to QLD so wants them gone ASAP.

First fridge, also has a freezer. This thing gets really cold. With the back plate freezing up if you turn the temp down too low within the fridge. So..be wary of that. Great for cold crashing...

Has a home made hopper which works great ad holds around 6kg of grain from memory.
At a guess it's maybe run only 300kgs of grain all up.
The total of above was over $500

Is there a correct way to connect the water and wort pipes, or does it not make any difference.

I've seen a photo whIch labels the water inlet on the opposite end to the wort inlet.

Am I doing this right?

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 05:53 PM PDT

Hi guys,

I received the kit Friday morning and set it up straight away. It's a coopers lager. I was told by the chap on the phone to use half the brew enhancer to reduce the abv.
It came out at 1.27 I think on the hydrometer

it was quite dark at first (photo included) and I've taken a photo today (Monday) and it's gone a lighter colour but no major bubbling/foaming on the top. I've just taken a sample and it's reading 1.1 (another photo included) it bubbled quite a lot when it went into...

Dry hopping experiment - good or bad idea?

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 04:54 PM PDT

I made a Bulldog Brews Premium IPA kit. The fermentation went well (based on hydrometer readings the ABV is 5.8%) and the beer looks good in the bottle, however it lacks taste and is a frankly underwhelming experience. In fact the best way to drink it seems to be to treat it like a lager and have it cold with some spicy food.

It appears to be a kit that cries out for a bit of pimping, which has me thinking about experimenting with some of the bottles as follows:

1) Chill bottle
2) Open...

Your First Grainfather Brew - A Walkthrough

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 04:23 PM PDT

So you've just got yourself a shiny new Grainfather, and whether you're completely new to all-grain brewing or you've been 3V brewing for years, your first brew can be a little confusing, bewildering or unclear. So if like me you work better visually, I've put together a simple walkthrough with lots of pictures to guide you through your first brew step-by-step.

This is a long one so apologies for that, but hopefully it's mostly foolproof and comprehensive.

With the GF Connect, you can...

Hi chaps. Thanks for allowing me to join your crew. I am retired and in my 70s and have been brewing since the mid 60s. I now live on a farm in Portugal and have planted a few vines, but the one thing that I miss is real best Bitter. Cold larger is fine on a hot day ( and we have plenty of those). There are a couple of English pubs with cask beers ( when they can get it)..but I haven't had a good real ale for over a year.

30L Keykeg Attachement Advice

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 03:46 PM PDT

Hi All,

I've managed to get hold of a couple of used 30L plastic Keykegs for free. I know these are pressure rated so was thinking if/how i could re-use them.

First things first I've (eventually) removed the bag from inside the keg as it'd be a nightmare to work with. This has been done without damaging the top. I have since then used them for secondary fermentation of some big batches of wine. They are perfect for this as it's easy to get a tight seal on them with the correct size bung...

But do I need a mash tun?

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 03:39 PM PDT

Hey dudes (and dudettes)

So, I've got my good old trusty Robobrew and I love it. Have been using it for several years now and pretty much mastered it. Not had a failed brew since I started using it. I absolutely love brewing - started when I was a teen, had quite a break but recently (4 or 5 years ago) started up again and never looked back.

Anyway, enough of the history! So, my current setup is a Robobrew, and I have a HLT which I use for sparging (yeah, I know - it's not an "all in...

Go-to Yeasts

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 03:12 PM PDT

I have checked the yeast stocks in my fridge and discovered that it is now time to reorder. The vast bulk of what I brew are either APA's or English ales/bitters. Normally I would stick to US-05 and either S-04, Notty and Liberty Bell for the English ales. I intend to order in bulk, either multiple sachets, or bulk packs, I could even consider culturing yeast, at a push.

So, what would people reccomend as a one off, do everything APA yeast and a one off, do everything English ale yeast? I...

Time to destroy the stash

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 03:07 PM PDT

Hello all,

I started brewing kits at around the beginning of December 2020. My first kit was a Simply Lager Kit which came with the starter set up, brewing buckets etc. I then brewed a Coopers Hefe Wheat Kit using Dry wheat spray malt and the results were great. I along with a little help from my neighbour, tucked into the beers as soon as they were ready and the 2 brews were gone far too quickly. So I decided that I would continue to brew, but hold off on drinking my own beer for a while...

Kegland digital turbo boiler reviews?

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 02:31 PM PDT

Hi, does anyone use this kit (35l option) available from Get er brewed? I've seen reviews for the Fullhorn and it looks/sounds like a great bit of kit. This one also looks good, and is slightly bigger with a digital temp control.

If anyone uses the Kegland boiler, would you recommend it? I'm stuck between these two and can't decide which one !

Muntons Gold Contintental Pilsner - Sudden Change in Taste ?

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 01:53 PM PDT

Longish post . . . bit of a personal intro and also a problem explanation . . .

I only started home brewing a few months ago so still learning a lot and just joined this group a day or so ago.
I've have been trying a range of lager and ale kits with, as you'd expect, varying levels of success. However, I do have to say that most have been much better than I expected (home brewing has moved on a LOT since I was younger).
In particular, I'm very impressed with the Muntons kits. The Smugglers...

A Look at Memorial Day Weekend Winners

Volume 322 | June 14, 2021
A Look at Memorial Day Weekend Winners

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the summer and retailers will look to buying patterns from this weekend to act as a signal for seasonal trends. The four top subcategories this Memorial Day were whiskey, vodka, tequila, and RTD cocktails, according to data from Drizly's Bev Alc Insights platform. RTDs were the big winner, up significantly from eighth place last Memorial Day.

Hard Seltzer drove the growth for the beer category, growing to 28% of share in the category from 25% last year. Among liquor brands, Hennessy rose to the number three spot from number eight last year, suggesting that consumers may reach for more cognac and brandy this summer.
