Posted: 14 Jul 2021 08:27 PM PDT

Pilsner yeast

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:14 AM PDT

Hi everybody!!

I've been just using 34/70 for years and years and have actually never tried anything else.. I used to be happy with it but the past year or so I've gotten a minute weird almost off taste I think is me disliking that particular strain so have just bought a couple liquid types (WLP850 Copenhagen lager and WLP833 German Bock)

My question is, are these clean lager yeast really that different? What are your experiences?

Awful American units!

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 04:58 PM PDT

Like every British schoolkid, I was brought up to believe that there were 4.546 litres in a gallon. These days, however, it seems there are 3.785! And that's a big difference!

So, anyway, my current practice is, anytime I see gallons on a recipe, whether on this site or in a link from elsewhere, I assume that Americans gallons are intended, unless explicitly stated otherwise. Is that what you guys do? I presume that many of the websites and software we use are originally American in...

Belgian breweries that use dry yeast, experiences with dry yeasts for Belgian styles, liquid snobbery, etc...

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 04:54 PM PDT

Prompted by another thread on Fermentis' safale T58, I've been thinking a bit about the use of dry yeasts in Belgian beers and by Belgian breweries. There is some suggestion online - quite convincing - that Struise use T58 for Pannepot, and De Ranke use T58 blended with S33 (or maybe another Fermentis strain) for XX Bitter. Are the use of these, and other dry yeast strains more prevalent in Belgian breweries - i.e. micros that won't have their own proprietary strain - than might be obvious...

Checked in on it this morning and it's running like a beast.

It started fermenting around 6am today and is nearly at final gravity 👍

Have a go at simple AG

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:31 PM PDT

If you've made a few kits and/or extract brews, why not have a go at a simple AG brew, to see the difference it makes? A small batch of AG beer is not difficult and you will discover the difference and feel the joy and pride of making it from scratch. All you need for 5 litres is 1kg of Maris Otter, or other pale malt, a packet of hops, and a sachet of yeast. You just need a thermometer, a decent sized pan and something to strain the grain from the wort. A big sieve, or a piece of cloth in a...

Kveik yeast and cold crashing

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:25 PM PDT

Hi, got my first brew with Kveik yeast just finishing in the fermenter right now. I brewed last Saturday (its now Wednesday) and fermentation seems to have finished (need to confirm with FG reading). I'll like to keg the beer so I can brew again this Saturday, so if I start to cold crash tomorrow (Thursday) and keg on Saturday to free up the fermenter for another brew that day is that all too fast even for Kveik? i.e. one week from pitch to keg?

It's Hornindal if that makes a difference and...

Plea for decent pubs in Northern Ireland

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:39 PM PDT

As the large commercial breweries have most of the pubs tied up with the usual pish, I'm asking all NI residents to name any decent pubs they know of and their location.
Thanks in advance.

Common word pairs.

I have seen this on another forum and its popular so will give it a go here.

It doesn't need to be beer related anything goes, it also doesn't need to match any of the words in the previous post.

I will start it with -

It's not clear from the listing whether MM are including the bamboo mounting with it or if it's sold separately. The videos imply it's included but the listing looks like it's separate but they don't appear to have the board in their shop. It looks incredibly smart though, and much easier to...

Safale-04 or 05

Hi, what's the difference between safale 04 or 05? I've just put this into Brewfather from DIY Dawg from their hazy Jane recipe with the ingredients that I have. Which yeast should I use? Safale 04 or 05. I've also used magnum instead of chinook. I have some Vienna
malt as well

Subscription services

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:53 AM PDT

Anyone a member of any?

I got a couple of Beer52 deliveries a while back and they were quite good but pricey.

I've seen that brewdog have jumped in and are offering 8 small "sessionable" (so low %) cans for £20 + £3.95 postage. For me they would be long gone in one night.

Is anyone actually paying £24 for that?

Anyone who does use them (a subscription service), which one, how much do you pay, and would you say it's worth it?

Fun with Opshaug Kveik

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:54 AM PDT

I've now got a couple of brews with the same Opshaug under my belt, each time top-cropping, saving, and growing the yeast before pitching it on brew day. It's been an interesting learning experience and actually way easier than I was anticipating - kudos to the kind folk on 'ere who answered my endless barrage of n00b questions.

Right now I'm fermenting two vessels with Opshaug and thought I'd share some observations. One is a kit beer, Bure Gold, and since my ferment fridge is tied up with...
