Reducing Oxidation while Bottling

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 09:53 PM PDT

Anyone have any good tips, methods or equipment for reducing oxidation from bottling process.

I currently use the PET bottles and have been using the carb drops coz I had some left over still. I then squeeze the air our of the headspace and put in the fermenter fridge with the inkbird probe on the side of one bottle to carb up at around 19-20c.

I currently bottle straight from primary after cold crashing for a few days using one of those bottle wands with the blue tip. This issue I have is...

Entire homebrew kit for sale

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 07:14 PM PDT

$1100 - Thornbury

Regretful sale, I have my first kid on the way and something's got to give... unfortunately for me it's going to be my homebrew set up. 😥

I'll be gruff just for a moment. As the sale hurts, and the price fair (at least I think it is!), the price isn't negotiable... So I'll ignore any questions about price. If it doesn't sell I'll lower the price in time. Also it's to be sold as the lot. I won't be breaking it apart.

This will suit anyone who'd like to try it all out...

Blonde Ale

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 07:12 PM PDT

Looking at doing a 11l blonde ale. 1.042 OG 15ibu. It will be 98% pale ale malt and 2% light crystal. Wanting to add Raspberries at about day 3 or 4 to primary fermenter. Would 1kg be okay or should I add more. It will be fermented at 20 degrees using Kolsch dry yeast. Not sure whether to pressure or normal ferment. Would it be better to secondary ferment.

No chill bladder (cube alternative)

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 02:33 AM PDT

Has anyone got much experience with these?

I used them for the first time for a double batch and they worked well. I often knockout 15L increments on my large system then dilute when I pitch. They are probably not suitable for that as it's a bit hard to weigh as you fill.

has anyone rigged something up to make it easy to fill them? I sat them in a Cooper's fermenter...

Free hops to collect - Scotland Central Belt - Now offering postage (details in post #6)

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 06:42 PM PDT

The very generous Dave Lannigan at Ride Brewing Co has offered up some spare hops for collection, these are whole leaf hops. I've already filled all that I could from the kind offer from Glasgow home brewers facebook group. Dave apparently has more and has offered for me to collect them. Now I already have plenty but if there were takers from Central Scotland that would like some free whole leaf hops then I'd be willing to collect a few bales and if you brought your own containers you could...

So I have a few bikes and here is a handful of them..........

Have a go at simple AG

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 04:02 PM PDT

If you've made a few kits and/or extract brews, why not have a go at a simple AG brew, to see the difference it makes? A small batch of AG beer is not difficult and you will discover the difference and feel the joy and pride of making it from scratch. All you need for 5 litres is 1kg of Maris Otter, or other pale malt, a packet of hops, and a sachet of yeast. You just need a thermometer, a decent sized pan and something to strain the grain from the wort. A big sieve, or a piece of cloth in a...

Adjusting amount of hops.

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 03:49 PM PDT

I'm going to brew a Greg Hughes' Amarillo single hop.

The recipe calls for Amarillo with 5% alpha acid. With the following additions.

54g - 70 mins
27g - 15 mins
27g - 5 mins
83g - 0 mins

giving 40 IBU.

However, the Amarillo I have has an alpha acid of 8.6% if I use the same additions it gives about 69 IBU which is really not the same beer.

I was thinking use fewer hops at the start of the boil and more towards the end of the boil to keep the bitterness around 40 and compensating...

Bottling a Triple NEIPA

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 03:18 PM PDT

Okay so I've made a Triple 10% New England IPA BIAB as my second brew ever. I know I know I went in at the deep end but go big or go home! I just thought I would keep a record of any change in colour and oxidation on here and if you're interested just follow along.

Ask me any questions!

The picture is an undercarbed (4days 30mins in the freezer test PET bottle) sample of the beer and my god if it stays like this for 2 weeks with a little more carbonation I'm a happy boy!

Which movie(s) have you watched recently?

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 03:15 PM PDT

I'm a bit of a cinephile, movies are probably my second love after brewing, I have a "watchlist" which is almost as long as my "brewlist" and I try to watch a couple of films off it each week.

I'm always open for suggestions and love hearing what people have watched recently, what their opinion was and why.

With such a melange of people on the forum I'm sure I'm not the only one, so what are you watching, or have you watched recently?

I'll go first, last night I watched...

Taps for FV

Water adjustments

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:44 PM PDT

I guess I'm quite lucky with my water living near Burton-On-Trent and getting Burton water. This often leads to very little or no water adjustments according to the usual calculators for alot of the beers I brew. However sometimes they come up with very small additions, like today - 0.6g of Calcium Chloride, 0.15g of Gypsum. I only had Gypsom so put some of that it, but it was tiny in 24 litres of water. I realise these numbers are arithmetically calculated so a number would be spitted out...

Hello from the very sunny south coast,

Just done my first kit - Wilko's Rose. Did this one mainly to see how to start off and because higher authority loves Rose!

Got all the bits from Wilko and followed the instructions to the letter

Have to leave it now for 3 days before adding anymore water.

Lets see how it goes

Beer line

Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:21 PM PDT

When i bought keg kit it came with a party tap, the beer line is i think 3/16th from the disconnect to a connecter with about 4'' of 3/8th to the tap, i have played around with it and made 3/16th bit shorter down to 2 meters and it poured fine for 3 glasses at 2 to 3 psi then flat as a pancake i turned it up to 10 psi no joy, my question is is the 3/8th making it lose all the pressure to get a head on the beer, all help appreciated
