Aussie Home Brewer

Hi all

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 07:43 PM PDT

I am looking at purchasing a 30l beer me boiler for BIAB. As this has no temp control i am using my inkbird 308. I know i could get a digiboil 35 for the same job but as i am looking at between 15 and l8l using my fermenter king junior i feel this is a waste. My question is profile set up. I will determine the boil of rate by boiling water for 60 mins. As there is a space under the tap is this mash tun deadspace. Or should i use this as trub chiller loss as i no chill.

Critical thinking welcome.
Will dry hop on day 3 and set to 10psi at the same time.
Only reason for pressure is to carb it up and help with cold crash in the chubby fermenter.

Fiery Ginger Beer

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 04:52 PM PDT

I`ve been wanting to get some alcoholic ginger beer on for a while - so as i was at a loose end today i brewed this (recipe from a previous forum thread with a few tweaks  )

Fiery Ginger Beer 5 gallons

1kg Fresh grated ginger
5tsp Dried ground ginger
1tsp Cream of tartar
2 lemons
2 limes
2.5kg Sugar
2tsp Yeast nutrient
1 sachet champagne yeast

Really quick and easy (and cheap) to do - ginger was donated so very cheap

First i grated the...

New to homebrew, hate bottling. kegerator recommendations

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 03:31 PM PDT

Hey everyone,
I brewed my first batch a few weeks ago. It was a Saison that went down from 1.050 OG to 1.010 FG. Wanted a secondary with Bret so added honey (about 10 grav) and got to 1.004.
I really liked the whole process apart from, as many know, bottling. A fun mistake was spending a week thinking my FG was off as I didn't know to adjust based on ermented wort :)

My question is what would be some of the cheapest buys on amazon for a 2 or 3 keg fridge? that are not hot rubbish?
I...

Brew in a Bag - what about the bag?

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 03:02 PM PDT

Just about to start my first ever all grain brew - a small stove-top batch brewed in a nylon bag sold for the purpose by a home brew shop.

When I'm done - what's the best way to clean and preserve the bag for the next time?

TIA!

Fermenter Size for Small Batch Brewing

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 02:59 PM PDT

I'm looking to try all-grain brewing - it'll take a while for me to work it out and so small all-grain kits (like the 4.5L and 11L kits from the Edinburgh Brewstore) look ideal for failing and learning quickly. Or suceeding and having some great beer!

All of my ferementaion kit at the moment is 25-30L.

If I ferment a small batch, do I need a small fermenter?

Or can I ferment 11L in a 30L fermenter without any problems?

Lalbrew London..again

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 02:48 PM PDT

Hello all
I've got a Fivepoints bitter clone lined up and was planning on using the above mentioned yeast. Mash temp for recipe is 67c but I'm wondering, with that temp there'll be more unfermentable sugars and combined with the London attenuation, typical fg 1.020,what that will result in? Should I adjust the mash temp or change yeast or just go with it?

Recommend me a low alcohol (1% or less) commercial brew

Does any brewery yet produce a beer under 1% which you are happy to drink?

Too much sodium metabisulphite

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 02:13 PM PDT

Hi all, when brewing the other day, I treated my water for chloramine with the addition of SMB.
However I have a powdered form and usually just sprinkle a small amount.
I slipped while adding the other day and probably endud up adding close to a teaspoon.
During fermentation the smell was so bad, like egg.
Now I know this CAN be normal, but never had it before with this yeast, S-04.
Checked a sample yesterday, and I know it's only a few days but ferment has basically finished, gravity 1.012...

Is filtering strawberry wine must necessary?

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 02:08 PM PDT

I'm probably going to make my second batch of strawberry wine soon. The most tedious part of the process the first time was filtering the must once I had squashed the strawberries to get the juice out. I did this in two stages, first a rough filter through a sieve to get rid of the solids and then a fine filter through muslin to get rid of all the little bits which took forever. So I'm wondering just how necessary the second fine filtering stage is? I gather it is supposed to help to achieve...

pan size help

i have Been looking for a good pan that is big enough to do a 2 gallon brew in , I found a pan online that is 14L stainless steal and strong , a lot of pans over 13L feel like tin cans and wobble when full , I guess if your on a budget that is fine but i don't feel they would last long .

Hazelwood Brewday

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 01:24 PM PDT

I only joined the group a few days ago and today was my first brewday since joining so I thought I ought to give this a go - at least once.

Starting with the crime scene, I revamped our garden a couple of years ago. My wife wanted decking, a gazebo, and comfortable seating, I wanted a bar, win-win!

So this is where I also brew, at my bar, shown here in winter plumage (clear plastic PVC tarps fitted to two sides).

Notts beers days

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 12:27 PM PDT

So, after reading so many other beer day threads, thought I'd add my own.

I'm back in the game relatively recently after too many years of not brewing! I think life got in the way and things stopped. Previously I had made kits and progressed to extract brewing with some good success. I also used to make wine kits, even being bold enough to make white and red wine for my wedding (exported to the Netherlands for the big bash!). My wife was stuck for a b'day present this year and suggested a...

An Iconic Fried Chicken Recipe from Napa

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 04:00 AM PDT

It may surprise you to know that the humble chicken, the one that has been dressed up, stripped down, spatchcocked, roasted on a spit and gotten every treatment under the oven fire, still has methods of preparation that can surprise.

"If you've visited Boon Fly Café, chances are you have either heard of or tried our award-winning fried chicken," says Aaron Meneghelli, chef, Boon Fly Café in Napa.

Part of the Carneros Resort, Boon Fly Café makes its iconic dish by soaking a half-chicken in a buttermilk and tabasco bath for 24 hours, and then drenches its skin and meat with an unforgettable blend of heat and spice. Hungry yet?

Thanks to The Essential Napa Valley Cookbook you can learn how to make this Napa-famous chicken wherever you are in the world.

Along with Boon Fly Café, you'll find over 35 recipes from other local spots like Model Bakery, Bounty Hunter and Gott. Best of all, 75% of the cookbook's proceeds go to hospitality workers who have been impacted by the novel coronavirus and the wildfires. The other 25% go to Feed Napa Now, a group of farmers, chefs and restaurant pros who help bring food to the region's families in need.
