Scottish Water / Campden Tablets

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 09:31 PM PDT

Im new to brewing and ive done as much research as i can so far, with reading books, watching youtube, and googling. Ive bought all the equipment and ingredients i need for one gallon batches (4.5L), and i was planning on brewing in the next few weeks. Then i read about water...

I didn't realise how complicated it was. Im already confused with the forum post on water, about chlorine, ph levels, etc. And im terrible at mathematics and calculations!

Does anyone know if i can use Glasgow tap...

Best way to get a label off a bottle

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 08:05 PM PDT

Hi folks,
Not sure what group to put this in, but put it here. I'm going to make some very small batches and wanted some 2 litre Fermentation Vessels. So, I got some 2 Litre Old Rosie. Reason being, (1) it's cheap for an FV, and (2) you get cider with it. Usually, I get the labels off of German swing-top bottles off in the electric dishwasher with no problem, but the Old Rosie labels won't budge.

Would you have any tips you would share for removing labels?

Just bought myself my first corny! What a Bargain!

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 06:31 PM PDT

So I was taking a walk during lockdown and was going past one of my local haunts and noticed the pubs courtyard was open.
Lo and behold, there was this dirty corny keg and being the typical scouser, I decided to take the doods car wheels off his motor and steal them :p Just kidding, although it was tempting to nick the keg I admit. But my conscience got the better of me and I thought I'd ask the landlord if he would be willing to sell it to me.

So I saw him yesterday and he didn't even...

Setting up a temp controlled fridge and brew bench...

Hi all, brand new at this. I'm in NZ if I use any pricing etc...
So I bought a Brewzilla all-grain brewing device recently, and while I was waiting for it to arrive I started gearing up my mini-brewery. I grabbed an old fridge at the dump for $20 cos I liked the styling. I was only intending to use it as an insulated box with a small heating element, but when I wired it up it ran beautifully, so I have heating and cooling available... athumb...

Thought i'd bring all my brewdays together in one thread.

Had a day off today and because Foxbats Mainline beer seems to have been the most popular amongst my friends, alongside GH's Paterbeir I thought I would brew it again.

Looking for somewhere between 17-20l for the FV and am still finding my way around my cygnet water boiler so using fag packet maths I used

300og Maris Otter
120g Caramalt
40g Chocolate Wheat
100g Crystal that I found at the bottom of the box and decided to get...

Thought I'd jump on the old bandwagon and make the move on from the "what did you brew today" thread. I suppose that even if no-one reads it I'll have a record for myself 😂 Oh well, here goes 😱

Busy day today. After setting out at kegging my Old Freckled Chicken and being faced with the prospect of having an empty FV I decided today would be my second consecutive brew day.

I'm now on a mission to use up existing hop supplies with a 25kg sack of clear choice pale malt but didn't have enough...

So who's growing chillies 2021?

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 03:14 PM PDT

I am! But then I do every year 🙂.

It's always tough to select what to grow but I've got Dorset Naga, Michael's Magic, Turtle Claw, Jamaican Jerk (all capsicum chinense), Tropical Orange (capsicum pubescens), and Madre Vieja (capsicum baccatum) in the propagator with reasonable germination so far.

I'll get my capsicum annuum sown at the start of March (they don't need so long a growing season) but haven't quite decided what I'll grow yet.

What are you growing / will you grow this year?

I think, in fact I know I am not the only member here who does a bit of cycling, maybe not all as obsessed as myself but nevertheless I thought anyone with an interest could post pictures of your bikes, it doesn't have to be an £10k super bike as long as you enjoy riding it, perhaps with a little bit about it or how you enjoy cycling.
So I have a few bikes and here is a handful of them..........

First my pride and joy the Ridley Noah SL, this aero bike took me to 10 race wins last year and...

I mix bits from recipes to get where I want it and add as much heat as you like. Makes "British Indian restaurant" style curries. A bit of messing about to get set up but nothing you can't find at a decent supermarket or Asian store.

Can a forced carbonated lager be cold conditioned?

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 02:31 PM PDT

So this weekend is going to be a super big bottle day. The kit IPA and kit cider are going to be portioned into bottles and bottle conditioned. The two other beers, a Bohemian Pilsner and Festbier. are going to be taken off their yeast into kegs for what I hope to be a longer period of lagering.

Here's the bit I'm a wee bit stuck with, I would like to send in a couple of beers for this month's competition, but would prefer to have the rest of the beer lager for longer. I could keg and force...

Small Batch Irish Stout?

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 01:28 PM PDT

Having always said, 'I am not really a stout drinker', before Christmas I brewed a stout, mainly to give to a neighbour. This was based on a Coopers Irish Stout kit but pimped as per suggestions from @terrym.

Well all I can say is that my neighbour didn't end up with too many bottles as I found it bl###y luverly. Anyway, I am now moving away from kits and brewing small batch all-grain beers (around 10 to 11.5L), so thought a stout should be one of the next to do, so I...

Am I making mistakes?

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 01:04 PM PDT

Hi All

Another new and bored lockdown member but thanks for letting me join.

I'm on my second brew now and I'm concerned I am doing something wrong resulting in questionable results.
My first attempt was a Woodfords Wherry kit I bought from Tesco for £20 which I thought was a good deal considering it came with a fermenting bin, spoon, hydrometer, hoses and of course...beer! I have done home brew many years ago and I remember the bottles were a massive pain in the ass so I bought a pressure...

The difference between live and dry yeast.

People using live yeast. What would be the main reasons for using live over dry and does it make a huge difference?
