Dextrine malt for head retention Posted: 15 Jul 2021 06:52 PM PDT My beers seem a weak in terms of head retention - especially the bitters which I prefer to carb only very lightly. I'm wondering whether a bit of dextrine malt might be an idea to help with this. The Simpsons stuff says "use sparingly (up to 5%) to add body and foam stability" but I'm wondering if anyone has experience of using this type of malt Ta |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 05:02 PM PDT Hello all Looking at my books and online Saison beers seem to primarily brewed with Pilsner malt...I don't have any...can I sub with pale? If not I need some bits from MM so could wait til later to order to see if I can catch the window for malt orders... I also have a load of frozen fruit off the allotment... raspberries, tayberries, gooseberries..can I use these? What's your "go to" Saison? |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 04:15 PM PDT Hello all I've got a Fivepoints bitter clone lined up and was planning on using the above mentioned yeast. Mash temp for recipe is 67c but I'm wondering, with that temp there'll be more unfermentable sugars and combined with the London attenuation, typical fg 1.020,what that will result in? Should I adjust the mash temp or change yeast or just go with it? |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 03:26 PM PDT I am about to start a Guinness brew this has to be one of my favourite drinks of all this , the recipe is a clone but it says to use food grade 88% lactic acid to your liking , it dose not say how much to use or when to add it . I think it means after fermentation or maybe when bottling , It says an easy less complicated way to slightly souring Guinness , So if there is anyone that brews Guinness or knows that can give me some tips would be a great help , |
Wort Chiller Copper vs. Stainless Posted: 15 Jul 2021 03:18 PM PDT I have a DIY copper immersion wort chiller. I don't like the fact that it comes out of the wort looking cleaner (slightly pink) than it went in. Anybody convince me why it's okay and I shouldn't waste money on a stainless one? |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 01:24 PM PDT Hi all, I used Brewfather software for the first time last brew. After a bit of playing around, I thought I had things looking ok. I added my own equipment profile, but mostly guessing with the numbers for volumes and efficiency as I'm still only a few AG brews in. I do BIAB, in Wilco stockpot and dunk sparge a bit in the FV. However, when I got as far as having the wort in the fermenter and to the right temperature, my OG was much higher than expected, and I had less wort too. I needed... Brewfather equipment profile |

Posted: 15 Jul 2021 12:21 PM PDT Hi All, I've been brewing for a couple years now and made some rather nice stout, lager and recently a fruity kveik (neipa I guess). HOWEVER I always have this taste in my IPA (aiming at punk IPA, neck oil, etc) and I don't know what causes it or even how to describe it accurately. It's not bad beer and I happily drink the lot, but I would really appreciate the input of another (or more than one) experienced brewers on this! Would anybody in the UK be brave enough to let me send them a... Taste my beer? |

Posted: 15 Jul 2021 11:31 AM PDT I only joined the group a few days ago and today was my first brewday since joining so I thought I ought to give this a go - at least once. Starting with the crime scene, I revamped our garden a couple of years ago. My wife wanted decking, a gazebo, and comfortable seating, I wanted a bar, win-win! So this is where I also brew, at my bar, shown here in winter plumage (clear plastic PVC tarps fitted to two sides). |
Kveik Yeast new to me and still chugging? Posted: 15 Jul 2021 11:15 AM PDT Hi I have only just tried Kveik Voss in my latest couple of brews. Now the question is it is 14 days and it is still chugging away as it did on the first brew I did the other week is this normal? I pitched it high at 38c in both and unfortunately I do not have temp control so it has slowly dropped over fermentation to 25Cish(I have wrapped the fermenters to maintain a higher temp). Both brews have shown the same characteristics of still chugging away after 14 days. I can tell it is not CO2... Kveik Yeast new to me and still chugging? |
