Posted: 19 May 2021 07:16 PM PDT Hi, I am getting terrible, splitting headaches from my brews. I had put it down to over consumption, but now I'm not so sure! Yesterday, I drank a pint of 2.7% and three pints of 4.4% homebrew. I also had a double scotch (not homebrewed!). This was all consumed over about 5 hours. I feel like if I did that in the pub, I would feel completely fine today. As it is, I've got a headache and feel *very* shaky and lethargic. Something else that seems to happen to distinguish this from a typical... Headaches, shakes - hangover? |
Posted: 19 May 2021 06:59 PM PDT I haven't really focused on changing my water profile that much until recently and have attempted it on my last 3 brews. On my last brew I used strange Steve's calculator and after letting mash rest for 20 minutes, I took a sample let it cool, and took a PH reading that showed as 6.24 I added some crs and it seemed to increase the PH to 6.35. I calibrated my PH meter when I first got it, I tested my water before adding any treatment and it showed as 8.15. I had my water tested just over a... Water profile advice |
Posted: 19 May 2021 03:46 PM PDT I'm having a dilemma about whether to go Keezer or Keggerator and the reason is I'm buying a new fridge or freezer to convert.I already have a two tap Keggerator but it's an old fridge and the missus wants a new one for the brew room I've recently converted from the garage. I already have 4 kegs plus a mobile kegging kit ordered but I'm torn at the minute as I can see pros and cons for both.Ideally 3 kegs on tap will be plenty as I've started Brewing hard Seltzer which the missus and... Hoppy beers. Never taste fresh or fruity like commercial Posted: 19 May 2021 03:28 PM PDT Hi all, I brewed a version of the Pale Fire from the homebrewing book, here (20L brew length) Heres the water profile I used (from Graham Wheelers water calculator) I tested my water before and after additions and heres the analysis: WATER ANALYSIS Pre Water Addition Analysis TDS: 34 pH: 5.27 Ca: n/a Alkalinity: 0.99ml remaining = 0ppm Post Water Addition Analysis TDS: 467 pH: 6.60 Ca: n/a Alkalinity: 0.92ml... Posted: 19 May 2021 02:52 PM PDT Odd one this... My iSpindel seems to have lost the plot a bit... Previous brew was perfect with iSpindel reporting accurately and reliably throughout. Next brew and the OG seemed realistic (should've compared with a manual reading in hindsight) but it soon went off the rails and the SG went from 1.060 to 1.010 in about 12 hours before continuing on to .997 before I removed it from the FV. A quick float in water reports .998 so it's as if it's lost all the good calibration work I originally... iSpindel Lost Accuracy |
Posted: 19 May 2021 02:33 PM PDT I thought I might as well join the fun and post my own brewday log here in the forum. Today is an experimental bitter with the following recipe. I've never used Northdown before but Fullers use it and I very much enjoy a pint of Pride. I've also never added Chocolate malt to a bitter before but it's there in one of my favourite bitters of late: Darkstar Partridge so I'm putting the two together and doing this today: 85% Pale Malt 10% Munich Malt 3% Crystal 240 EBC 2% Low colour chocolate... foxbat's brewdays |
Posted: 19 May 2021 02:25 PM PDT I've enjoyed cask Jaipur IPA many times in pubs and seem to recall the canned/bottled version being alright. Drank a can of it last night (first in a while) and it wasn't anywhere near as nice as I was expecting. Anyone else got a view on this? Has it changed, was it always poor in cans, or was this perhaps just a duff batch? |
Counterflow Chiller - how long to make it? Posted: 19 May 2021 02:18 PM PDT About to order the bits for a counterflow chiller of the pipe-in-pipe variety, using 8mm micro-bore copper pipe; and I'm trying to decide whether to go for 5m or 10m. Obvs the longer it is, the faster flow rate can be for a given cooling performance... but equally there's not much benefit going up to 10m if 5m is already doing the business for the flow rate when draining under gravity. Could anyone who's made one of these share their experience please? Ta! |

May Competition - American Pale Ales Posted: 19 May 2021 02:13 PM PDT I have had a few enquiries already so I thought I would post. Posted: 19 May 2021 01:55 PM PDT I'm going to upgrade my brewing experience by moving away from my kettle elements in a plastic fv biab which will become my HLT to a 50ltr s/s mash/boil pot, brew in a basket. All under the watchful eye of a control panel. I'll be brewing in the garage, as oppose to outside the garage, and I'm limited to 3kw. I want to install a switch that will stop me accidentally having the hlt and boiler on at the same time. The boiler element is 3 1kw elements in one, all will be separately controlled... Control panel help please. |
Posted: 19 May 2021 01:47 PM PDT Hi, I just purchased at me beer for the weekend, with the intention of re-using the bottles for my next brew. I just noticed that they are screw top beer bottles, are these just regular bottle that can be capped again? Cheers, Mark |
Posted: 19 May 2021 01:35 PM PDT New members may not be aware that we have in the past had 4 runs of forum T-Shirts (two are pictured below) thanks to member Dan125, new forum sponsor Benfleet Brewery said he may be interested in making a run so if you would be interested please add your name to the thread. Designs can be discussed but this predominantly to see if there is enough interest so no need to give sizes just say how many you would like if it goes ahead. Forum T-Shirt. |
How do you relax with a homebrew? Posted: 19 May 2021 01:30 PM PDT Hard to beat lying back in my garage where I brew, have my beer on tap and the oldest lads Xbox watching MotoGP , YouTube and Netflix and have a vape in peace with the loo next door...... |
Posted: 19 May 2021 01:22 PM PDT Hi all, I'm brewing a GEB Belfast Brown Ale recipe. Fermentation got off to a good start and was very active. I got home today after work to find the airlock full of what looked like krausen (or remnants off). I removed the airlock wiped it and the top of the FV down, sanitised and replaced. Was this the right thing to do here or should I have left it? (I know, I should have asked first!) The airlock began bubbling almost instantly after I replaced it and all seems normal now. |
Posted: 19 May 2021 12:58 PM PDT Evening all I've got a 10l gose fermenting at the moment. I'm going to add frozen shop bought raspberries (currently in the freezer). I basically have a few questions with regards to amount, sanitation etc. Firstly I was thinking of adding around 1.4k to my 10l brew. Too little, too much or about right? As for sanitizing. I was thinking of just letting them thaw (in the bag) and add without a pasteurizing/sanitizing step (apart from spraying the bag and scissors with star san). Most of... Adding/using raspberries |
