Free hops to collect - Scotland Central Belt - Now offering postage (details in post #6) Posted: 27 May 2021 06:15 PM PDT The very generous Dave Lannigan at Ride Brewing Co has offered up some spare hops for collection, these are whole leaf hops. I've already filled all that I could from the kind offer from Glasgow home brewers facebook group. Dave apparently has more and has offered for me to collect them. Now I already have plenty but if there were takers from Central Scotland that would like some free whole leaf hops then I'd be willing to collect a few bales and if you brought your own containers you could... Posted: 27 May 2021 05:11 PM PDT One of my more recent ordering ingredients while hammered cockups has come back to bite me. I thought I had ordered the all the stuff for an amber ale brew, but accidentally re-ordered the grains, hops and wy2308 for a German lager brew instead. This was then left in the kitchen for 4 days before I opened it and discovered my mistake. The yeast has been in the fridge for 2 months now, I smacked the pack 2 hours ago, but there's no sign of swelling up to indicate viable yeast activity. On the... I think I've killed my yeast! |
Posted: 27 May 2021 04:41 PM PDT I have a Grainfather conical fermenter, my question is, could I just put the wort straight into that, hot, lock it down, then cool it via the water jacke and pump to pitching temperature. Then inoculate with yeast? I wonder whether cooling with the chiller and leaving it open that long to cool is doing it any good? |
Is this beer worth trying to save? Posted: 27 May 2021 04:24 PM PDT I brewed a batch of Timothy Taylors clone back in January. When it came to bottling I bottled several bottles before realising I hadn't added sugar as I usually batch prime. SO added sugar for remaining volume and cracked on. I separated the non primed bottles to sort out another day and enjoyed the others. I've now got a keg setup and considering decanting the bottles into a keg and CO2 purge and carbonate. Seems simpler than opening all the bottles, adding sugar and recapping and waiting... Is this beer worth trying to save? |
Posted: 27 May 2021 04:20 PM PDT Some people may not want to write out a full brewday report but just say what they brewed. So what did you brew today? I made a 'bit's and bobs stout' to use up the odds and ends of grain I had |
If you were starting again what would you buy?? Beer-kit brewing Posted: 27 May 2021 04:18 PM PDT Hi All, A newbie to the forum and first post, and doing what I think a lot of people do and asking for a bit of a steer on that first set up/gear purchase. So thanks in advance and hopefully not too many silly questions/assumptions! I've been thinking of doing some homebrews for some time and finally have the room to do it (built in garage which I can claim 50% from the wife for brewing), time might be a bit of a struggle with 2 kids but hoping kits will make the process doable based on... Back and brewing again in the new world. Posted: 27 May 2021 02:53 PM PDT Hi all, Back in a better brewing frame of mind. Been quiet dealing with other health issues. Now completing my 30m2 BIAB brewery. Oh yeah, got married in Feb so life is very good. I have been brewing and lurking, but this is the first time I feel ready to get back and visible. |
Posted: 27 May 2021 02:43 PM PDT I thought I would start one of these posts to document my journey from kit brewer to all grain. I'm going out will also encourage me to blog more frequently. |
Posted: 27 May 2021 02:37 PM PDT I saw this on twitter earlier. Show us in pictures the memories from your childhood. I will kick it off with - Washing the steps. I remember the house wives (it was ok to call them that back then) washing the steps in our street then rubbing the front edge with what i believe was a donkey stone to make it bright white you can still see the steps today with the warn edge on the old streets here. Posted: 27 May 2021 02:25 PM PDT Its not just the mobile app the online banking page also warns you before you can access your account. NatWest mobile app users are being directed to a warning screen advising them to beware of cryptocurrency scams. The bank said it had received a "record number" of reports about such scams between January and March 2021. The alert warns account holders to make sure they have direct control of any digital wallet that is... Swing top bottles, lacking carb after refrigeration Posted: 27 May 2021 02:23 PM PDT After I've left on fridge for like 48 hours I noticed some are flat , is this normal or could seals have perished? Mind you they've only been lightly used but I do put them in dish washer after use ? |
Posted: 27 May 2021 02:10 PM PDT Is it just me. or are supermarket own-branded peanuts superior to the big-name efforts (in particular, KP)? |
Posted: 27 May 2021 02:08 PM PDT The last couple of batches I've done seem to not have the same head and head retention as usual. I'm worried about sanitation maybe? I've done a brown beer and a wheat beer and I haven't done anything different to usual, but the beers are lacking head retention. What's going on? Could it be down to my recent introduction of treating my water with sodium metabisulphate? Or some crappy infection? Despite the thread title my marriage is fine, but thanks for thinking of me |
Water Profile: nervous about mineral levels Posted: 27 May 2021 02:06 PM PDT In terms of water for bitters, I've seen many experienced members here talking about sulphate and chloride levels up around 100-200 ppm. This seems two or three times higher than the target profiles I see on Bru'N Water - and when I try to hit these sorts of levels the spreadsheet seems to be telling me I'm doing something a bit 'out there'. I don't want to produce insipid beer, but a little nervous about producing a batch that tastes peculiar - can anyone offer any experience/advice to... Water Profile: nervous about mineral levels |
