Posted: 28 May 2021 06:42 PM PDT Hi all My brother asked me to brew a beer especially for a "big weekend" we are having at his house. I made a blonde (my own recipe) with the following: 4kg maris otter 500g vienna 250g of oats CML general ale yeast Went in the fermenter last night and is now going great guns bubbling like crazy. However, this beer has to be ready for 26th june leaving me approx 3 weeks from bottling to drinking...is this enough and do you have any tips on how to maximise conditioning in this time... Bank Holiday Weekend Nearly Here.... Posted: 28 May 2021 04:19 PM PDT And for once it looks like the weather is going to play ball. Off to the Gower Peninsula tomorrow with the caravan for the week, can't wait to hit the beach and do some body boarding with the kids, then beers & BBQ. Hope you all have a great weekend and/or half term if you have kids. Feel free to share your plans with us. Cheers! |
The Chaos that is a Buffers Brewery brew day Posted: 28 May 2021 03:44 PM PDT Greetings all. Thought I'd have a go at this brew day blog thread, so here goes... Some of you know me as a bit of a gadget freak so it should be no surprise that brew days for me are as much about playing with my brewing kit as it is about making beer. So my brewday account will include a lot about my kit including pics, so if that's not your thing, stop reading now! As I don't have a dedicated brewing space, brewday is actually brew-two-days. Day 1 involves setting up my kit... The Chaos that is a Buffers Brewery brew day |
First Gold - Marmalade Belgian taste - infection? Posted: 28 May 2021 03:15 PM PDT I've done a historic (Edwardian) IPA recipe that usually has a fairly standard Fuggles / EKG hop bill, but as a single hop beer with First Gold. About 40 IBU / 5.5% ish with most of the IBUs at the start of the boil, some at 15 mins for flavour, and then the rest of a 100g pack as an 80° hop stand. It's got this marmalade thing going on, but also a very slight, what I would call, Belgian twang that you often get in a triple. It is very slight; I can't tell if it's just the tangy and of... Posted: 28 May 2021 03:13 PM PDT I only joined the group a few days ago and today was my first brewday since joining so I thought I ought to give this a go - at least once. Starting with the crime scene, I revamped our garden a couple of years ago. My wife wanted decking, a gazebo, and comfortable seating, I wanted a bar, win-win! So this is where I also brew, at my bar, shown here in winter plumage (clear plastic PVC tarps fitted to two sides). |
Posted: 28 May 2021 03:10 PM PDT Well it's been a long time coming due to other commitment, but today I finally did my third AG brew (woo Hoo). It was a day of 'firsts':

Posted: 28 May 2021 02:40 PM PDT So I guess I'm rather new here so I hope it's ok to start a thread here, I think it might be more useful than the written records I keep. Today trying a stepped starter for the first time since the packs of Lallemand diamond yeast I have are not even remotely close to the pitch rate I'm looking for the two lagers I'm looking to do this weekend. I had thought of just doing one but if I'm going to tie up my fermenting fridge for weeks at a low temperature I thought I might as well make best... Anna's Brewdays |
JaDeD Immersion Chillers in the UK Posted: 28 May 2021 02:40 PM PDT Hi, Been thinking about investing in one but never actually seen a UK based supplier. Final option would be to buy one direct and pay for shipping/duty etc. But, if I was going down that route I'd be interested to know if anyone else would like to combine orders to save on shipping. A Hydra is $160 and currently shipping ONLY on a single Hydra is $117, two are $127 and three are $155, four $184...you see what I mean... from $117 per item to about $46 is quite a saving. So: 1) Does... JaDeD Immersion Chillers in the UK |
May Competition - American Pale Ales Posted: 28 May 2021 02:03 PM PDT I have had a few enquiries already so I thought I would post. Time to get all of your American type pales - pale ale, West Coast, East Coast etc etc, in for the monthly comp. I am planning on judging on the weekend of the 5th June. PM for my address |
Posted: 28 May 2021 01:32 PM PDT I've had my go-to recipe for golden ale and I'd like to switch it up. Do you guys have any suggestions for recipes? I have got Candi sugar I can add and an abv of 8% or higher is fine and dandy. |
Tapcooler counter-pressure filler vs. Blichmann beer gun 2 Posted: 28 May 2021 01:27 PM PDT Hi all, I want to buy a low oxygen bottle filler, preferably with the option to bottle carbonated beer from a keg. My carbonation cap works a treat for plastic screw-tops, but I prefer glass. I can't decide between the Tapcooler, plus ball lock adaptor and keg connector, or the Blichmann beer gun v2. Does anyone have any experience with either of these products, or other low-oxygen bottle filling kit? These aren't cheap, at around £140 for either option. |
What are people's experiences with MJ M31 Triple Yeast? Posted: 28 May 2021 12:55 PM PDT As above, but specifically, what are the recommendation on fermenting temp, given its specs give a range of 18-28°! I've got two packs in the fridge I want to give a spin, I've also finally got my grubby mits in Graham Wheelers Euro beers book. So am going to brew his Duvel clone with the MJ yeast. I was thinking of unplugging the cooling part of my brew fridge, setting the temp to 23°, and just let it rise to what it wants (but never let it drop below 23°) then cold crash after 2 weeks... I need ideas for cider for the mrs Posted: 28 May 2021 12:34 PM PDT I'm not used to brewing cider, as I'm more a beer person The Mrs likes Rekorderlig, but she doesn't like strongbow or Magners, as they give her a horrible hangover apparently. Are any of you in the same boat? Can anyone recommend kits that may suit what she likes? With regards to flavours, she likes lots of fruity stuff, mainly strawberry and lime, but drinks most of them. |
