Dry hopping

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 05:24 PM PDT

I have a mangrove jack juicy ipa brewing and i am at the dry hopping stage, i have put the hops in a muslin bag instead of placing on the top.
it just seems to be sitting on the top of the brew in a big lump rather than spread all over the top of the brew.
Is this still an effective way of dry hopping or should i just take the hops out of the bag and put them back in on top of the brew, this is the first time i have used the muslin bag for dry hopping

So I guess I'm rather new here so I hope it's ok to start a thread here, I think it might be more useful than the written records I keep.

Today trying a stepped starter for the first time since the packs of Lallemand diamond yeast I have are not even remotely close to the pitch rate I'm looking for the two lagers I'm looking to do this weekend. I had thought of just doing one but if I'm going to tie up my fermenting fridge for weeks at a low temperature I thought I might as well make best...

Thought I'd jump on the old bandwagon and make the move on from the "what did you brew today" thread. I suppose that even if no-one reads it I'll have a record for myself 😂 Oh well, here goes 😱

Busy day today. After setting out at kegging my Old Freckled Chicken and being faced with the prospect of having an empty FV I decided today would be my second consecutive brew day.

I'm now on a mission to use up existing hop supplies with a 25kg sack of clear choice pale malt but didn't have enough...

Vegetarians and Vegans

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:00 PM PDT

Why are Vegetarians accepted for what they are yet Vegans seem the butt of many jokes and are seen by some as nothing more than bandwagon jumping attention seekers, i don't know any vegans but did know one vegetarian many years ago who stooped eating meat as in his view killing animals to eat them is cruel, he did wear leather due to the fact the animals are killed for food not for their skin.

Kveik Yeast in American Amber Ale

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 03:26 PM PDT

Hi,

I'm planning to brew an American Amber ale using Amarillo hops (35 EBU) and was planning to use a Voss Kveik yeast. Any suggestions or comments? It's the 1st time I've used a Kveik Yeast.

Recipe for 10l / 2 gallons:
1600g Maris Otter
125g Caramalt
375g Crystal malt
200g Torrefied Wheat

Amarillo Pellets - 10g 60mins: 8g 30mins: 8g 10mins: Any Amarillo left will then be added at Flame Out approx 25g and allowed to stand for 20 minutes before chilling.

Cider kit

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 02:21 PM PDT

Hi, I have a wilko cider kit fermenting and it's been in the bucket for 14 days and is still bubbling away, the temperature has been steady from day one. Any ideas why and shall I be patient. Thanks

Ordered some cheap load cells from Amazon, to make a simple WiFi-connected weighing pad to keep track of how full my Corny's are (or aren't...)

Anyone played with these before?

foxbat's brewdays

I thought I might as well join the fun and post my own brewday log here in the forum. Today is an experimental bitter with the following recipe. I've never used Northdown before but Fullers use it and I very much enjoy a pint of Pride. I've also never added Chocolate malt to a bitter before but it's there in one of my favourite bitters of late: Darkstar Partridge so I'm putting the two together and doing this today:

85% Pale Malt
10% Munich Malt
3% Crystal 240 EBC
2% Low colour chocolate...

Can anyone suggest a yeast for this english pale ale?

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 01:56 PM PDT

Hi, All!

I'm looking forward yeast suggestions for the following English pale.

A full bodied, fruity ale with a subtle bitterness and glorious grapefruit and pine aromas. Whitstable Bay Pale Ale is designed to suit all palates and offer a light, thirst quenching, refreshing taste

I will be using Maris otter, some Pilsner, a light touch of Crystal and sugar.
Hops- challenger and Slovenian Goldings, added mostly late.

But what yeast?

I have liberty bell and verdant kicking about...

Bottling a Triple NEIPA

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 01:53 PM PDT

Okay so I've made a Triple 10% New England IPA BIAB as my second brew ever. I know I know I went in at the deep end but go big or go home! I just thought I would keep a record of any change in colour and oxidation on here and if you're interested just follow along.

Ask me any questions!

The picture is an undercarbed (4days 30mins in the freezer test PET bottle) sample of the beer and my god if it stays like this for 2 weeks with a little more carbonation I'm a happy boy!

New range of kits from Muntons arriving in the spring

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 01:43 PM PDT

I was contacted recently by Muntons to see if I would be prepared to brew one of their new kits that are due to be launched in spring 2021. I agreed and will be starting the brew this weekend and then supplying feedback to Muntons.

All of the new kits are 2 x can malt extract kits, with yeast and hops, and Muntons describe them as 'kits with modern flavours and styles'. The range is as follows;

American Pale Ale – 4.5% ABV
West Coast IPA – 6.5% ABV
American Amber Ale 4.5% ABV

Brown Lager not fermenting

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 01:37 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

I'm trying a brown lager (Heineken Gerste) recipe from a book that I found about old Dutch beers.

Recipe:
28L water (14.5L mash, 13.5L sparge)
3.9kg Pilsner malt
155g Carafa 3 malt

48g Hallertau Mittelfrüh pellets

Mash temperatures:
60 min 68C
10 min 75C

Boiled it for 60min

I've got a OG of 1.042 with a batch size of 23L in my fermenter.

Cooled it down to 18C and after aerating the wort, I added 2 pack of Saflager w34/70 on top of the foam and though it would eventually...
