The 'Recommend me a TV series' thread Posted: 07 Jun 2021 09:14 PM PDT Just one episode of series 4 of The Americans left to watch before moving on to series 5. For anyone that hasn't seen it, it's set during the cold war and is the story of two Russian agents living a 'normal' family life in America. The pace has never dropped over four series and I've enjoyed every episode. Brilliant TV. Oh, and Keri Russell is absolutely gorgeous, which also helps. Which TV series would you recommend? |
New range of kits from Muntons arriving in the spring Posted: 07 Jun 2021 07:52 PM PDT I was contacted recently by Muntons to see if I would be prepared to brew one of their new kits that are due to be launched in spring 2021. I agreed and will be starting the brew this weekend and then supplying feedback to Muntons. All of the new kits are 2 x can malt extract kits, with yeast and hops, and Muntons describe them as 'kits with modern flavours and styles'. The range is as follows; American Pale Ale – 4.5% ABV West Coast IPA – 6.5% ABV American Amber Ale 4.5% ABV New England... New range of kits from Muntons arriving in the spring |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 05:51 PM PDT Hi all, I am about to decant my fully fermented IPA into my barrel about 24 hours ahead of bottling. However the barrel is a little smelly. A bit of a hoppy, sweaty, sterilise smell. Is that going to mess with the smell and taste of the beer, considering it's only going to be in it for 24 hours, while it settles and i get the bottles sterilised and ready for bottling? The barrel's had a good wash with soapy water and sterilised, but still a bit of a pong. Maybe I give it another good wash... Pressure Barrel |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 04:30 PM PDT Has anyone managed to get their hands on this Omega Yeast strain here in the UK? I'm desperate to try it out, as they have bio-engineered it so that it doesn't have the gene to produce 4-vinyl guaiacol (the phenol we perceive as clove). Have scoured the interwebs and nobody in the UK seems to sell it, i read somewhere that it's only available in the US because some countries don't allow bacteria/yeasts which have been GM to be used in food production. I wondered if anyone has managed to... Omega Yeast Bananza OYL-400 |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:18 PM PDT I'm planning on upgrading my mango chutney barrel kettle to stainless, and as part of that I'm looking at alternative elements to the £5 Tesco kettle ones I've relied on so far. This AliExpress... 3kW AliExpress Element |
Malt Group Buy in London/Berkshire Area Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:05 PM PDT @chillipickle @Victor.l I have been approached by a couple of people to see if it would be possible to create a collaborative buying group in the London area to benefit from the low prices we are achieving in South Cheshire @chopps and I who set the group up here are happy to offer any support we can and whilst the group is being set up, and of course appropriate contacts at malsters. Our view is that there is much more to be gained... Malt Group Buy in London/Berkshire Area |
Plastic coopers brown bottles , crap ? Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:52 PM PDT I've had a few cartons of these over the years and I'm gonna chuck them now Never get cold enough and I often find the taste in them isn't up to scratch, getting the tips off about takes skin off me hands and need molegrips to take the damn things off More than enough bottles now and swing tops so it's adiĆ³s to them |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:42 PM PDT I always use a blow off tube when using my FV as i have had a couple wines come through the airlock (see picture below) they are also useful if you only have a standard airlock and a vigorous fermentation keeps blowing the liquid out. They are also much quieter than airlocks. The how to bit - Cut the bottom off an airlock then get a short piece of syphon tube and soften one end in boiling water, insert the airlock tube leaving enough sticking out to get a good seal in... How to properly use a conical fermenter? - Newbie question Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:20 PM PDT Good evening forum! I have my first brew in the fermener right now, which is a Brew Monk 30l (https://www.geterbrewed.com/images/detailed/5/products-20191023171302-01707030_zfrf-l0.jpg). The recipe I followed is a best bitter, using WYEAST 1968 London ESB yeast. I plan to bottle once fermentation is complete. What would be the best procedure to follow? 1. Should I try to dump the trub/yeast using the bottom outlet of the fermenter before bottling or would it be better to let the... How to properly use a conical fermenter? - Newbie question |
Conditioning and carbonating in Corny Keg -process check Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:16 PM PDT Having taken the plunge with cornys I just wanted to confirm the process I have in mind below having read up on various posts... corrections suggestions welcome! 1. Clean everything. Full disassembly. Thorough rinse. 2. Sanitise everything and reassemble. Leave some sanitiser in keg. 3. Beer transfer from fv. Empty remaining sanitiser solution from corny. Connect long hose to fv tap and run to bottom of corny. I also have in-line filters on hose. Open tap and fill to leave gap from top of... Conditioning and carbonating in Corny Keg -process check |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:14 PM PDT Evening all! what are folks thoughts on the Fermzilla 30L All rounder? I have it in mind for fermenting under pressure and for NEIPAs to keep out O2 while transferring to keg under pressure. it's on my list for Santa. Should it be? |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:07 PM PDT I can't work this out, so maybe someone has a simple formula. 5kg of grain + 15litres of strike water = how many litres (approx) |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 01:58 PM PDT Interested to find out how much fermenting capacity everyone has ? I just bought a new fridge last month and I'm considering another one as I have to wait until the current one has cleared the fridge before brewing again. |
Posted: 07 Jun 2021 01:52 PM PDT I thought I might as well join the fun and post my own brewday log here in the forum. Today is an experimental bitter with the following recipe. I've never used Northdown before but Fullers use it and I very much enjoy a pint of Pride. I've also never added Chocolate malt to a bitter before but it's there in one of my favourite bitters of late: Darkstar Partridge so I'm putting the two together and doing this today: 85% Pale Malt 10% Munich Malt 3% Crystal 240 EBC 2% Low colour chocolate... foxbat's brewdays |

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 01:14 PM PDT Hi, just a quick question. Does dry hop 3 days mean dry hop for 3 days after fermentation stops and just before transferring to bottle? Thanks for your help. Cheers |
