Consumers Show Strong Support for Direct-To-Consumer Spirits

80% of consumers believe distillers should be allowed to ship their products directly to consumers in any state, according to a survey from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS). In addition, 62% confirmed that they have purchased beverage alcohol online through direct-to-consumer (DTC) or e-commerce platforms.

Only nine states currently permit DTC shipping of distilled spirits, though an additional seven states temporarily allowed in-state shipping for distillers throughout the pandemic and some are considering bills to permanently legalize the practice. DISCUS has aligned with American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) and American Distilling Institute (ADI) to ensure spirits DTC shipping laws are a top legislative priority.

“These survey results clearly illustrate the importance of this effort, and the need to work collaboratively to help move legislation forward to create these very opportunities,” said Margie A.S. Lehrman, CEO of ACSA.
