Dry hopping in a fermentation bucket Posted: 21 Aug 2021 04:47 PM PDT Hey guys, Time to ask the experts, so I'm a bit less of a brewing buffoon In my current setup I have a simple plastic fermentation bucket (tap at bottom, hole in lid for airlock). Half way through (1week) the process I intend to dry hop with 25g cascade in a muslin bag. I've read of various weird & wonderful setups, of how folks deliver the hops while keeping 02 exposure to a minimum. But I wanted to know how you guys have efficiently done this in the past for a bog standard bucket... Dry hopping in a fermentation bucket |
Posted: 21 Aug 2021 04:42 PM PDT My latest batch of lager appears to have finished fermenting at day 4 (pressurised fermentation at 20C). This is my first batch using an ispindel to measure the fermentation and the reported gravity has been constant (at target FG) for 24 hours. My normal practice is to leave it for 10 days then cold crash for 3 days, adding gelatine, before kegging at roughly 14 days. I just wonder if I am wasting a week and I should just cold crash now and keg in 3 more days? The perceived wisdom is that... When is it really finished? |
Posted: 21 Aug 2021 03:13 PM PDT I thought I might as well join the fun and post my own brewday log here in the forum. Today is an experimental bitter with the following recipe. I've never used Northdown before but Fullers use it and I very much enjoy a pint of Pride. I've also never added Chocolate malt to a bitter before but it's there in one of my favourite bitters of late: Darkstar Partridge so I'm putting the two together and doing this today: 85% Pale Malt 10% Munich Malt 3% Crystal 240 EBC 2% Low colour chocolate... foxbat's brewdays |
Posted: 21 Aug 2021 01:26 PM PDT Hi I have gone down the leg route for my brew, I have a 3.6kg co2 connected but the beer come out flat? Did i need to put carbonation drops in the keg like I did with my bottles? The beer tastes fine just flat? |
Combined benchtop bottle capper and corker - does such a thing exist ? Posted: 21 Aug 2021 01:21 PM PDT At the moment I have a beer bottle capper and wine bottle corker which are two lever operation and on occasions I have problems lining up the caps/corks with the bottles. I am looking to buy combined bench top model that will hopefully make my life easier. Does anyone know of a combined capper and corker ? Thanks! |
Posted: 21 Aug 2021 01:17 PM PDT Some people may not want to write out a full brewday report but just say what they brewed. So what did you brew today? I made a 'bit's and bobs stout' to use up the odds and ends of grain I had |
Posted: 21 Aug 2021 01:10 PM PDT So I guess I'm rather new here so I hope it's ok to start a thread here, I think it might be more useful than the written records I keep. Today trying a stepped starter for the first time since the packs of Lallemand diamond yeast I have are not even remotely close to the pitch rate I'm looking for the two lagers I'm looking to do this weekend. I had thought of just doing one but if I'm going to tie up my fermenting fridge for weeks at a low temperature I thought I might as well make best... Anna's Brewdays |
Self-Build Kegerator - Temp control? Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:45 PM PDT I have aquired the fridge (large upright, no freezer compartment), the kegs, CO2, gas and beer lines and the taps, all ready to go - just one question about temperature... The 2-4 degrees that it runs at clearly isn't cellar temperature. Should I be thinking about something else to add to make it adjustable to something less cold? |
The Chaos that is a Buffers Brewery brew day Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:39 PM PDT Greetings all. Thought I'd have a go at this brew day blog thread, so here goes... Some of you know me as a bit of a gadget freak so it should be no surprise that brew days for me are as much about playing with my brewing kit as it is about making beer. So my brewday account will include a lot about my kit including pics, so if that's not your thing, stop reading now! As I don't have a dedicated brewing space, brewday is actually brew-two-days. Day 1 involves setting up my kit... The Chaos that is a Buffers Brewery brew day |
Shopping List For New Winemaker Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:14 PM PDT Hey guys, going to be having a go at a few WOW recipes in the next couple of weeks. I've got plenty demijohns, stoppers, airlocks etc. Got a hydrometer and confident using it. I don't have a trial jar though (only done large kit wines in a bucket so just put hydrometer into bucket). In terms of other bits and pieces, I guess I need: Yeast Yeast Nutrient Pectolase Bentonite Stabiliser Finings Camden Tablets Sterilisng Powder Looking at the features of Youngs Super yeast for example, it... One minute beer reviews with Jersey and Tim Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:02 PM PDT Probably the highlight of the consistently excellent Brülosophy podcast. Sadly, coming to an end soon. Not sure what's going to fill it's place, but I've cast my vote. |

Posted: 21 Aug 2021 10:49 AM PDT Just like the other cool kids, time to move away from individual posts and collate everything from now on into a single thread..... AG#15 "Podium" Late Hopped IPA ('cos there are 3 kinds of hops, innit) This is actually a rebrew of my AG#5, probably still my personal favourite brew to date - but there are a few tweaks, oh, and some stuff to make it way more complicated than it needed to be - why can't I just keep things simple!
