2020 kicked off one of the most significant periods of modernization for the beverage alcohol industry as states relaxes laws on direct-to-consumer sales in the face of the pandemic. "Distribution has always been evolving, but this is the biggest change I’ve seen in my 40 years in the business," says Lloyd Sobel, EVP and chief commercial officer for Breakthru Beverage.

As a result of the shift in channels, wholesalers have found new ways to offer value including: reorganizing to create craft divisions, forging new partnerships, and investing in their own e-commerce capabilities and content, among other solutions.
