Why Whiskey Distillers Are Producing Gin
As whiskey distillers wait for their spirits to age, they are looking to other options to drive financial returns in the short term. Many distillers are turning to non-aged clear spirits like gin, which can be bottled and sold almost immediately.
This strategy has already seen success in markets like Ireland, where the number of Irish gins boomed as Irish whiskey distilleries grew from four in 2010 to 32 in 2019. Beyond providing an additional revenue stream, the process of distilling gin is also providing these creators with another chance to practice the craft behind craft spirits and experiment outside the confines of whiskey.
As Lance Winters, head distiller at California’s St. George Spirits explains, “There are aspects of who I am as a human being that I can’t express through whiskey, so expressing that through a gin makes a lot of sense.”
