Throwing caution to the wind with....

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 03:28 PM PDT

An experimental Mango IPA type..

So today Im throwing all caution to the wind and going totally experimental with a small 1 gallon ish tester batch of mango beer. Im using cascade & Chinook as that's what ive got. The grain bill consists of 1050gr MO & 55gr of dark crystal as I want to use it up. The plan is to chuck 300gr of fresh mango pulp in on day 5.

Should I dry hop?

Mash - 60

Boil is 60mins - 60min - Chinook 7gr - 15min - Chinook 4gr - 0min - cascade 12gr

Yeast will be Notts ale...

Greg Hughes Winter Warmer - Anyone done without the added the extras?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:41 PM PDT

Hi,

I am thinking of doing the Winter Warmer beer from Greg Hughes Home Brew book (v2).

I don't fancy adding the cinnamon and ginger as I fancy a straight "Winter' type beer.

As anyone brewed this and what are your thoughts? What would improve it and would you do it again?

How would you describe the beer? Whats it commercial equivalent?

Cheers

Floating dip tube or standard?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:18 PM PDT

Been pressure fermenting in corny with floating dip tube then closed transfer into purged keg. Is there much advantage in continuing to use floating dip over standard? Considering the beer has now been racked into a clean vessel surely you would only get a small amount of sediment in the full pull? Just wondering if there is any other great advantage to using floating dip in clean serving keg. Any disadvantages to pulling from the top when serving?

CO2 purging barrels/cornys. How do you do it?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:49 PM PDT

Looking at various threads there seems to be at least 4 methods.

Method 1
Pressurise the container (barrel or corny) with CO2 from a regulated gas cylinder. Vent and repeat 3 or more times.
Method 2
Fill the container with water and, after sealing it closed, displace the water with CO2 from a regulated gas cylinder until all the water is displaced leaving the container full of CO2.
Method 3
Connect the fermenter to the container with a length of tubing so the gas produced during...

Beer Strength

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:28 PM PDT

Not really a question this time, more of a comment.
Brewing beer from kits mainly around 5% alc. and have to say the ones I have made have come out at
5% or even a bit higher, usually with 3.5 kg of extract and varying amounts of additional sugar.
No problem so far!
However, some kits state a finished beer of 4.5% but only come with 3kg of extract and no mention of
additional sugars.
You cannot make 40 pints of 4.5% beer with only 3kg of malt. It makes roughly 4% beer.
Anybody else found...

1st SMaSH

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:05 PM PDT

Hi guys

Attempting my first ever SMaSH, it will be BIAB method with with volume of strike water c.15 litres, hoping to achieve 10 litres of beer.
I'm thinking of using Maris Otter and Mosaic hops but not sure of quantities and timings for the hop additions.
Any advice welcome....

Boil Size: 19 liters

FERMENTABLES:

How Hard Seltzer Taprooms Are Driving Innovation

Volume 368 | August 18, 2021
How Hard Seltzer Taprooms Are Driving Innovation

The meteoric rise of hard seltzer has seen the category’s market share grow in five years to a level it took craft beer 40 years to reach. Now small seltzer-focused taprooms are opening up around the U.S. aiming to continue that momentum.

Much like the craft beer scene, these taprooms are providing producers with the opportunity to experiment with new offerings one keg at a time, rather than having to fill 2,500 cans and send them out on the market. The flexibility allows these all-seltzer spaces to drive category innovation beyond basic White Claw flavors, with offerings such as gin-barrel-aged seltzers, wine-flavored seltzers, and cocktail-inspired seltzers popping up across the nation.

“It really [is] a great place for us to not only showcase who we are and what we stand for, but it becomes the testing ground for new flavors, to see what consumers want,” said San Juan Seltzery CEO Ron Lloyd. “Every one of our new flavors has gone through our taproom, and you can tell what’s really hot.”
